Kind of hard to overstate the importance and quality of that win. Clemson is coming off 17 straight wins. Grice had only lost to Wake Forest, in April. He threw the best eight innings I’ve seen this year. He was the best player on the field even after he moved to 1st. We beat a team that many analysts picked as a top contender to win the CWS. Our defensive play and defensive decision-making was the best of the season. It was a very well-coached game, and the confidence in pitching changes was very solid. Our bats were better than stats show. We had a lot of good contact that didn’t pay off, and often with men on base. Great performances from the mound. My only criticism is that Dolly has a very predictable scout when his pitch count gets over 80. That bad inning was avoidable. We have to be a step ahead of the scout. The clutch hitting from Zane with two outs was a life moment for him, and a serious confidence builder for the team. Our pen’s pitching, and our pitch calls were A+. That was a program defining win. That said, Clemson is still in. Stats favor us based on pitching and rest, but they are a very strong team. Hats off to Grice who may be the best all around player I’ve seen this year. I hope we can keep our composure and continue to play good situational opponent strategy. That game last night was one for the ages. Let’s hope we don’t take anyone lightly. The lesson of Notre Dame last year is a good one. Mature teams know how to keep the pressure on without losing composure. We did that last night beyond any expectation. Let’s win and get to play at home again.
