He was at the Orange Bowl too. People who still think the “Peyton curse” is real need to touch grass
Not exactly. Guys were pumping 95+ and most at least touching triple digits every now and then. 90 used to be the norm. Now if you don't throw 95 you aren't going to last very long. More and more guys are having Tommy John than ever before.Pitchers used to sling heat for 9 innings and their careers were long . I think the modern way is just to keep fresh arms in there and switch up styles, but I’d say they still have the stamina.
The guy had a big strike strike zone, especially on the outer part. For most part, I thought he stayed somewhat consistent with it being a wide zone.
The problem, that favored Skenes more than our guys. If that guy was umpiring Dollander, it would perhaps help us. It helps anyone throwing 100+ but not so great with accuracy. Ben Joyce would like that ump.
With that he said, I think he would also sometimes took the bait of the 'catcher jumping up and running to dugout' type of tricks.
Overall. not a great umpire.
Both in college softball and baseball, the umpire quality is not generally very great. Softball is worse than baseball.
The best young umpires in baseball are working minor league pro ball trying to eventually land a cushy MLB union job.
All of that is just in my opinion... I do not think any of them are trying to shaft any specific team.
I agree, they were talking about it Saturday with Skeens. A lot of older umps used to hate calling Randy Johnson games because he threw so many pitches over 100 that their eyes would fatigue trying to keep up. I think that's what happens a lot.I agree with all of this, and I've noticed some of the older umps that are used to 85 to 92 mph pitching through most of their career have a hard time with 97-101 mph pitches and just defer to a strike when so fast their not sure. I don't think their throwing it, just what they think or guess.

Lefty Quinn Mathews is not a good matchup for us. Crafty lefty that mixes his pitches up. Watched him pitch against Texas and thought to myself that I hoped that we wouldn't see him if they made it to the CWS.[/QUOTE
We, like most other teams, look average against really good pitching like everyone in the tourney has to some extent. Just got to hitch it up and play ball. I sure wish that every guy on the team would stop swinging for the fence on every pitch. Level the swing up (stop upper cutting so much) and lets drive in runs with base hits as well as HRs.
The one behind the plate last night is relatively young but was terminated as a MLB umpire in 2014. So, the NCAA takes the rejects.
Anyone who was at the LSU game —— are they enforcing the “no bringing in outside bottled water”?
Going to be a hot one today and just trying to plan.
