He was at the Orange Bowl too. People who still think the “Peyton curse” is real need to touch grass

Yeah, it's crazy how these Vol fans hang on to these media guys that bring that up for a laugh when we happen to lose or they dislike PM or UT. The tinfoil is real with some drive by fans. Shaking my head.

Pitchers used to sling heat for 9 innings and their careers were long 🤷🏽‍♂️. I think the modern way is just to keep fresh arms in there and switch up styles, but I’d say they still have the stamina.
Not exactly. Guys were pumping 95+ and most at least touching triple digits every now and then. 90 used to be the norm. Now if you don't throw 95 you aren't going to last very long. More and more guys are having Tommy John than ever before.

The guy had a big strike strike zone, especially on the outer part. For most part, I thought he stayed somewhat consistent with it being a wide zone.

The problem, that favored Skenes more than our guys. If that guy was umpiring Dollander, it would perhaps help us. It helps anyone throwing 100+ but not so great with accuracy. Ben Joyce would like that ump.

With that he said, I think he would also sometimes took the bait of the 'catcher jumping up and running to dugout' type of tricks.

Overall. not a great umpire.

Both in college softball and baseball, the umpire quality is not generally very great. Softball is worse than baseball.

The best young umpires in baseball are working minor league pro ball trying to eventually land a cushy MLB union job.

All of that is just in my opinion... I do not think any of them are trying to shaft any specific team.

I agree with all of this, and I've noticed some of the older umps that are used to 85 to 92 mph pitching through most of their career have a hard time with 97-101 mph pitches and just defer to a strike when so fast their not sure. I don't think their throwing it, just what they think or guess.

I agree, they were talking about it Saturday with Skeens. A lot of older umps used to hate calling Randy Johnson games because he threw so many pitches over 100 that their eyes would fatigue trying to keep up. I think that's what happens a lot.

Yes. With our arms, this could work to our advantage if we can survive today. Just need the bats to heat up against an outstanding left-hand pitcher.

Got to get by Stanford, then our pitching stands out for this situation. Need some bats.
This team will take you on a rollercoaster ride. I suspect they'll show up today and have a great game.
Of course this game is in Dollander's hands. He needs a great game, not a slow start.

Lefty Quinn Mathews is not a good matchup for us. Crafty lefty that mixes his pitches up. Watched him pitch against Texas and thought to myself that I hoped that we wouldn't see him if they made it to the CWS.[/QUOTE
We, like most other teams, look average against really good pitching like everyone in the tourney has to some extent. Just got to hitch it up and play ball. I sure wish that every guy on the team would stop swinging for the fence on every pitch. Level the swing up (stop upper cutting so much) and lets drive in runs with base hits as well as HRs.

All this talk about older umpires with vision and/or memory issues reminds me of a card someone gave me once (it may have been a “Far Side” cartoon) showing two old geezers standing on a tee box looking off into the distance. One says “Did you see where my ball went?” The other replies “Yep! But I don’t remember.” Here’s hoping we get an ump today who has good vision and who can remember what he just saw. Go Vols!!!

The one behind the plate last night is relatively young but was terminated as a MLB umpire in 2014. So, the NCAA takes the rejects.

He probably needed some extra cash to call that high and wide strike zone.

To be fair the ump was consistent imho in that high and wide strike zone for both teams.

Skenes was just more consistent in utilizing that larger zone than our guys.

Anyone who was at the LSU game —— are they enforcing the “no bringing in outside bottled water”?

Going to be a hot one today and just trying to plan.

As I recall, two years ago, they made me pour out the water. But, they let me bring in the empty plastic bottle.

The line at the water refill station was long, but we saved a bunch of cash.

You can bring in one bottle water less than
20 ounces.
