The Official Tennessee vs. USC Upstate Game Thread, 7:00pm ET(11/16/13), SportSouth

please, Martin had plenty of chance to get in the tourney, (UGA x2, SEC tourney).

you cant blame the NCAA for not selecting them on an insanely weak bubble. martin did it to himself.

I agree that he laid an egg in the sec tourney. And that's ultimately what caused us not to make it. But a win over top 10 UF a couple weeks before didn't matter? or a top 15 Kentucky a few before that? I guess those aren't good resume wins.

The difference?

Defense.

Offensively we were very much the same the entire game, however they scored 42 in the first half on over 60% from the field.

They scored 23 in the second half, and I don't have the percentage yet but I'm gonna guess around 38%.

We play the whole game with that awareness and intensity on defense and we win by 20, and are 2-0.

They weren't going to hit all those shots in the 2nd half. Difference was 15-2 run that completely deflated the opponent and Bartons 3 was the dagger.
McRae is having trouble laterally on d.

I'm glad I didn't see the game, just got home from work. Looking at the score and hearing that we had to come from behind to win, I'm now convinced that we are in trouble this season. Martin will not get it done here, time to go ahead and start a coaching search for next season!

You just said the situation matters, which is ludicrous when we have looked uncoached for long stretches of his entire tenure.

Winning games matters. Winning games while looking good doesn't. If we win against UVA and some of our other actually respected OOC teams, no one will care that we only beat USC-Upstate/etc. by 7 and looked bad (except people calling for him to be fired, apparently).

We always come on at the end of the season, so almost all SEC games are known wins at this point.

We weren't screwed when we didn't get in. We put ourselves in a position to be among the final teams considered for the final bids. If we're in that group, we deserve whatever we get.

If you don't consider the rest of the field, then no, we weren't screwed last season. When you do look at the teams that made the tourney, then yeah, you have an argument.

each team on the bubble has a couple of good resume wins. but they also have losses to the likes of UGA. Martin hasnt shown he can win when it counts.

We outplayed them the entire second half it was clear, and we played ok the first half, defense killed us the first half.

Yes they hit some shots, but slit if the shots were open blown assignments by our defense, didn't have those the seconds half.

We went 11-7 last yr

Basketball, especially in Nov, is a crapshoot. UT struggles agains USC Upstate (Spartanburg as I know them) and they may beat Kansas next week.

It isn't like football. Just get your feet under you and win some games.
