The Official XXIX Summer Olympics Thread

Haven't watched any of the Olympics tonight. I really liked Horton though. What happened?
got slightly jobbed by judges on high bar final. Did the best routine it appeared (to my untrained eye to be fair), but got silver.

My wife competed all her life growing up and she explained to me the gold medal winner's routine started with a lesser degree of difficulty but he did his routine with almost perfect form.

Horton's routine was much more difficult but what often happens is the power needed to generate the speed needed for the multiple releases usually has a negative effect on form. Usually they reward riskier routines executed well over safer routines with perfect form but in the end it what the judges see that counts.

If she were judging Horton would have won but she admitted that it could have gone either way. Apparently they just responded to the form from the gold medal winner positively.

so how does your wife explain what happened to Nastia Liukin the other night on uneven bars? Her routine was considered the same difficulty as the winner, yet it was obvious the Chinese girl had more key mistakes.

Oh, that was an obvious screwjob. My wife thought both she and Shawn were screwed.

Even as far back as the team competition she was pointing out inconsistencies in the judges scoring of the women and to a lesser extent the men's as well.

I would agree with your wife... It was pretty obvious throughout the contest that the Chinese got inflated scores. Our teams just had to overcome that as best they could. I actually thought the Chinese guy deserved the highbar gold, but most of the competition was an exercise in scoring the chinese higher than the rest of the field... besides the fact that two of the chinese "women" shouldn't have even been eligible. The most obvious flaw to me was on women's vault. Chinese girl lands on her KNEES, and gets above a 9/10 for execution?!?! WTF.

That was by far the worst case of scoring in gymnastics during the Olympics.

Thus, further proving that a sporting event that relys on a judge in any matter is always going to be flawed.

Usain Bolt... what a freak of nature. Can't wait to watch him run tonight... evidently he didn't do any showboating like he did at the end of the 100.

i read where he broke the WR for the 200.

they said his 40 time would be like a 3.8 or 3.9 if i'm not mistaken.

Can't be true. If they timed him at full speed in the 40 maybe but having to start and get up to speed I find it very hard to believe he would break 4 seconds...

Bolt's in the same class now as Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis. No man has ever broken both the 100m and 200m WW in any Olympics

just imagine how bad you would be defeated by him in a race

I was comparing some of my times when I ran in HS and it really showed me how fast these guys are. They'd be running with their flag already by the time I got to the finish line.

On a similar note, I really have respect for anyone who will take on the 400m. Now that's a ridiculous race

His average for the hundred would have gotten him a 3.876 at 40 yards. I imagine that there is a possibility he could have squeezed in under 4s in the first 40, but not very likely. I am sure he would get under 4.1 in the 40 though.
