The Official XXIX Summer Olympics Thread

And as far as kicking the ass of other countries' guys, I completely agree. The problem is that the history of Olympic boxing judging is so disgraceful that it's almost a waste of time to watch any of it.

huge win in mens volleyball. Now every US team will play for the gold in vball.

That was a great freaking match! Wow. Spectacular. They just snapped a 9-game win streak against the US, by Russia.

And Brian Clay is performing great in the Decathlon.

Now the very real possibility of a US gold medal sweep of all volleyball events.

Well what did you really expect? The Chinese are so set on winning medals to show the outside world their "progress" that nothing would get in their way. Since they issue the docs it's no surprise that all of them are in line. I just can't see how it would ever be proved short of cutting off her leg and counting the rings

and just that quickly China has printed off enough (fake) documents for the IOC to quit investigating the 14 year old. How predictable.

ESPN - FIG complies with IOC, seeks more proof of Chinese gymnasts' ages - Olympics
This too was expected. There will be no way to prove without a doubt their ages, and the Chinese will just deny.

"Surely it's not possible that these documents are still not sufficient proof of her birthdate?" Lu asked. "The passports were issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The identity card was issued by China's Ministry of Public Security. If these valid documents are not enough to clarify this problem, then what will you believe?

"If you trust every Web site but not a government...," he said. "There are so many Web sites, so much hearsay. These are not official. It is possible that all news on the Internet is accurate?"

1) Yeah, and they have no reason to falsify the documents.

2) WRONG. These websites the files were found on ARE OFFICIAL Chinese GOVERNMENT websites.

IMO this blatant cheating puts a black mark on all the things the Chinese Women's gymnastics team accomplished, as well as the games as a whole.

:hi: :)
Who won the men's beach VB? I missed it last night!
Rogers/Dalhauser, USA

:yahoo: Hate now that I missed it!!!
They went down 6-1 in the first set and rallied to win 23-21. Pretty sharp stuff.

Lost the second set like 21-17. Dalhauser lost his block again, and they made a couple of mental mistakes.

KILLED them in the third set 15-4 or something. Dalhauser "released the Beast" and had 5 or 6 blocks. 3 in a row that was just crazy. Dude just kept spiking it right into his hands. Good stuff. Match ended on a Dalhauser block.

Enjoyable match.

All the issues along the way with a country such as China put a big enough black mark on the Olympics as a whole for me. There's too many issues to list, but I think you get the gist of it all. Like I said, this was predictable. It's just another example of the dozens of political and legal issues that the IOC is more than willing to turn the other cheek on to show off the People's Republic of China. Let's just hope that the athletes and spectators remember not to bother bringing any of China's toys home.

I agree. Looking at the medal tables I can see that something else is fishy. It is statistically unlikely that you would win such a high number of gold, but relatively low number of silver and bronze medals.

I enjoyed much of their showmanship, but that's all it is... China is still a country insistent on opressing its people.

Thanks for the play-by-play! :) Oh man! I really hate that I missed it now!!!

"We believe the matter will be put to rest and there's no question ... on the eligibility," IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said.

I think that says it all about how deeply the IOC will investigate.

If these valid documents are not enough to clarify this problem, then what will you believe?

Chinese for "which lie should we tell to get us out of this?"

North Korea was barred from the 1993 world championships after FIG officials discovered Kim Gwang Suk, the gold medalist on uneven bars in 1991, was listed as 15 for three years in a row.

Now that's just funny.

Oh I agree with the judging in boxing (there's a thread about it somewhere,) but boxing isn't the only combat. Judo, wrestling, and a couple of other flavors of kung-fuery all qualify. I guess fencing does, too.

Even if the IOC were not the most corrupt organization on the planet, there's no way that they have an investigate branch that can compete with the Chinese Communist Party. Especially given the language. You can't strip somebody's gold medals based on screenshots from a web site, and the CCP will be able to make the documentation say whatever they need it to. They're pros at this.

And the CCP doesn't care whether they get a black eye in the Western press over this anyway. They don't care about impressing us; the audience for all this -- the games, the opening ceremonies, the emphasis on gold medals -- is their own people. The point of the games and the spectacle is to enhance the government's own legitimacy with its citizens. A scandal over this girl's age is below the radar, because the Chinese have been conditioned over the last 200 years to think of themselves as the victims in their dealings with the rest of the world. Even my Chinese friends here (who are decidedly NOT supporters of the government) think it's mostly sour grapes on the part of the American press.

I don't care. I want our 4 foot gymnast to have gold medals, even though they would be based upon a silly rule that limits who can compete. Forget that it flies in the face of the Olympics identifying the best of the best, we want our golds.

Even if they get DQ'd I wouldn't want our girls to recieve the gold. However, I disagree with you, I think the Chinese girls should be DQ'd.

I think they should be DQ'd for breaking the rule, but the rule is asinine. If a 13 yr old is the best gymnast, so be it.
