The Official XXIX Summer Olympics Thread

True they should be booted, I wonder of anyone has taken into consideration the fact that we have girls here who could have competed but were passed over since they wouldn't have made the age limit.

Even if they get DQ'd I wouldn't want our girls to recieve the gold. However, I disagree with you, I think the Chinese girls should be DQ'd.

Why not? China has 1.3 billion citizens and they can't put a winning 16+ team without violating the age limit? If they violated the rules (which I'll admit need to be changed) they should get their medals stripped and the next in line should get the gold. If the rules allow it next time, more power to them. Why should our girls not receive gold when we played it straight?
The rules were there. The host country most likely violated the rules in, not one, but three instances on the ladies gymnastics team alone. Screw em'.

Just a point... this rule is specific to Women's Gymnastics. So it can't be violated in other events...

It was created 20 years ago to help younger gymnasts avoid injury by over-training.

That's true, Rwemyss. I should have left 'alone' out of it since I know there are other events, such as diving, that have athletes younger than 16 during the calendar year.

:hi:

Your main point remains. If a team wins by cheating, and gets a DQ, the second place team should receive the gold. I don't understand any logic otherwise.

actually I made that point, I believe it should just be vacated, the next person in line would probably not feel like the won it? Look at our track guy that got a medal after they went back and reviewed the team that stepped out of bounds. He didn't care the moment was lost.

Congrats to the women's hoops and the three former Lady Vols who took gold.

FYI, tipoff for Sunday's men's basketball gold medal game is 2:30 am.

I watched the replay earlier. Very nice job on the ladies' part.

I can't wait to see the Redeem Team bring the gold home.

I disagree with that. As does Blues.

I've got to go with Rwemyss and Blues on this one. The Olympics is set up to see who performs the best in an event while observing all the rules. If you are DQ'd, you didn't perform the best. Likewise, if you were the best among the legit competitors then you are the best in the competition. The medals are awarded for relative performance not absolute performance. If all competitors are weak relative to past competitors in the Olympics, they still receive the medals.

Thats just my opinion, which doesn't matter anyway since the IOC believes the Chinese are telling the truth.

I guess all those girls at the gauntlet in Thailand really are 21!

There is no way that anysingle member of the IOC believes it.

And even if they did, I doubt they'd have the guts to call out the host country on it. Nevermind that the girls ages changed quite recently. Did you read the Wetzel column on it, BPV? It was pretty good stuff.

The Chinese do some crazy things when it comes to launching people through the air and using a mass of humanity to create a spectacle.

My two cents.....the ceremonies were all a little homogenized for my taste. Of course the same holds true for most Superbowl half time shows too.

I've heard several commentators put words to what I was feeling when I watched. It was so organized and perfect that it showed what a totalitarian government can do. Impressive and troubling at the same time.

We were joking at home when the "earthquake" kid walking around with Yao Ming was waving a Chinese flag that was upside down. Somebody was in deep doo-doo for that little mix-up. The flag-maker's family will never here from him again!
