Bump. A thread about a freakin' movie with Sandra Bullock gets all sorts of attention, but this doesn't get one reply?!

This series will be SO GOOD.

Major bump. Pretty bumped about this series. If it's half as good as BoB, it will be great.

some of Tom Hanks' recent remarks are troubling, but if he was able to keep his politics out of this, I think it has the potential to be just as good as BoB.

I have set this to record. I agree MG, if Tom words start to interfere, screw him and the series.

I'm unaware of Hank's words or views. I don't see him bringing them into a series about the Pacific theater.

For anybody that doesn't have HBO, try ninjavideo.net. They will probably have every episode loaded up within a day.

that the war in the Pacific was fueled by racism and a desire to eradicate every Japanese citizen, not just the soldiers. he then equated that to the modern war on terror.

The Pacific theater was racially charged on both sides, but it's over the top to say the US/allies wanted to actually eradicate the Japanese (or vice versa). And it was nothing like the modern war on terror.

I still haven't read or heard exactly what he said. Was he talking in generalities about the US hating Japanese, if so, I would think this to be accurate. My parents still have a deep hatred for japanese.

Was he comparing the war on terror to what could happen or that is it blatantly a war of racism against muslim?

He has his history backwards. The war in Europe was the hard sell to the American people and the military.

Odd.......... I thought Hanks was on the up and up.

I wonder if he has ever read any thing about the rape of nanking or nanjing

I'm reading the book right now, if they stick to it this should be a good series. One of the main characters, "Shifty" is a former UT football player and Ambrose talks about Neyland (doubtful that will make it to the series though).

Don't listen to the blog version of it. Every time I've heard Tom Hanks talk about the series, the comment has been "it was very racially charged on both sides" which is ABSOLUTELY true.

Dehumanization of the enemy (sometimes through means of racism) has happened in every war ever to some extent. I don't get why people are so worked up over Hanks's comments, unless they have no real grasp of the history of war.

Right. Because there was very little racism present at the time.

I never said there wasn't racism during WWII (just ask the Chinese), I just reject Hanks' claim that the war on terror is being fought in a similar manner.
