The Pearl lie: From beginning to end

Hope he got a good recipe, considering.

So, do you think of Pearl as an honest man who told one little lie and then got singled out by the big, bad NCAA? I'm just trying to see what exactly you're arguing about.

No, I think Pearl is as dirty as the rest of them. College basketball is a cesspool. Somehow, the thick heads in here have a problem grasping that. However, what he did in comparison to what has gone on at other institutions where the competitive advantages were much more profound is not even close. Does it excuse his stupidity? No, but some people have trouble differentiating between the two obviously.

So you've basically spent 8 pages trying to differentiate between buying players and lying to your bosses, when pretty much everyone here agrees that both will (and should) get a guy fired?

Pearl is 126-46 in five seasons at Tennessee and has led the Vols to five straight NCAA tournaments. Facts speak louder. Pearl's first big mistake was bringing them to his house especially after UT had beaten OSU and Craft from Findlay, Ohio. Second mistake was to hire what appears to be an attorney you have to wonder how he ever passed the bar, and obviously uniformed attorney out of his area of practice. Just like this site, some people on here that claim to be attorneys but sure don't come across that way. Third, lie to the NCAA. Did the attorney do anything but wear a suit cash his check on Friday?

-was
-"has" not needed here

I mean, will it really matter whether Jim Tressel or Chip Kelly or Bruce Pearl is "worse" when they're all unemployed?

Right. You've just been trying to educate the board. It's funny because no one has compared Pearl to others who have committed more serious transgressions except you. Just be honest, what's really been going on is that you've been defending Bruce Pearl at every turn and now you're just fabricating some BS reason for doing so.

No, the topic has evolved for better or worse. My point has always been the same. Pearl had to go, but what he did in relation to some of the other idiots was not the same. Yes, the end result was the same. In addition, the NCAA is a hypocritical monopoly that has no problem making millions of dollars off amateur athletes and issues judgments based on which way the wind blows.

You really are fit to be tied aren't you? Damn, Skippy, go punch something.

And actually, someone else did. That was at the very beginning of this thread and started some other discussions. There are those pesky facts getting in the way again.

With all the crap going on at Auburn and OSU, the good folks of the NCAA sure did a great job catching Pearl lying about a BBQ. Absolutely pathetic.

Haha. Not at all. I just enjoy watching you avoid ever answering a question when being called out. It's quite telling.

See the edit above Skippy. The thread has moved all over the place just like every other thread. I know which way the conversation will go with you so I'll treat you like most children.

But hey, thanks for being a badass and "calling me out". I'm scared now.

Attorneys don't usually wear uniforms. From the story, UT's attorney was actually trying to coax Pearl into telling the truth. I love how some of you knuckleheads seem to think this is anyone's fault but Pearls'.

Another story came out the next day in which Pearl's attorney stated that Pearl wasn't made aware of the photo until the day of the interviews. However, Glazier (UT's attorney) knew about it 6 days before hand. Why he didn't tell Pearl, who knows. That still doesn't exonerate Pearl or the other assts from not knowing the location of the picture, but I wonder why that wasn't divulged.

Drew Maddux, head coach of CPA in Nashville, stated on the radio back in May that he met with Pearl awhile back when he was recruiting a player of his. Maddux stated that Pearl told him that he didn't know about the photo until the day of the interview and he panicked. I would assume after his 3 assts had already had a chance to look at the photo and discuss it with him, it shouldn't have been a big surprise.

None of this has any bearing on what Pearl did. Glazier had a duty to look out for the University's best interests. If those interests dovetailed from Pearls', Glazier has no obligation to inform Pearl of anything if the NCAA didn't first. Additionally, from the transcript, it seems like Glazier is trying to coax Pearl to tell the truth.

All this "panic" over the photo still doesn't explain the call to Craft's father.

He also panicked because he knew he was up to no good. A decent coach wouldn't have panicked. They just would have admitted it and taken the punishment.

Exactly. And, why would it be bad that Pearl wasn't informed exactly when the University received the picture? The only reason Pearl is upset is because he could have made a more believable lying scheme had he been given 6 days to plan.

I hate the NCAA as much as the next guy, but they really didn't do anything wrong here. They went after Pearl for a secondary violation, which they do all the time. Kiffin had several while he was here.

Pearl created the problem by lying about it, trying to get everyone at the BBQ to lie about it, calling Craft's parents to make sure they would lie about it, and then "coming clean" only after all of that didn't work. That's not really something where you can say "everyone does it" and he brought it entirely upon himself.

It may not have any bearing on what he did, but it could've had a bearing on what he might've done if he had known when Glazier found out. Who knows if the story would've been more outlandish or if he would've come to his senses and fessed up from the get go? No one. Additionally, you would think an attorney hired by the university would have the best interests of all parties involved with the university. Obviously he didn't. That still doesn't exonerate Pearl and the assts from not telling the truth in the first place.

Who said it did? I'm sure it's tough for a Tiger fan to come in here and criticize anything UT has done though. That fan base has always loved Pearl and UT with all its heart.

I actually had a lot of respect for Pearl before this whole fiasco. Not anymore, though.

Anyone who would think that is utterly clueless as to the role and responsibilities of an attorney.

What about recording a phone call with a recruit secretly, editing it, and then sending it to the NCAA?

I agree......with a small difference though.

Pearl owned up to the recording.

The Photo was sent anonymously. By Matta or Crafts would be my guess. Be a freakin man and own up to it.

My guess is Pearl lied to both of his attorneys and said he didn't know anything about the photo or else he was given poor advise all around. I just can't imagine attorneys seeing the picture and Pearl not disclosing the entire truth to them either. Had he owned up to it he may very well still be coach. JMO.I understand I may be missing a lot of facts.

This. Once the 'AA showed the picture to Glazer, it was all over for Pearl. Keeping facts from or lying to your employer's attorney is a bad idea.

Glazier was UT's attorney, not Pearl's, so obviously he is going to represent UT and not Pearl. However, it is not out of the realm of possibility for Pearl to have seen the photo when Glazier did unless the NCAA informed him not to do so.

I wish the photo in question would be published so everyone can decide for themselves just how grainy or low quality it supposedly was.
