Hat, I know you're not the biggest Pearl fan, but if you were him, what would you be doing to try to fix this team?
I'd start holding people accountable. I don't care if I had to make 3 substitutions at every dead ball, mindless plays would get a guy a seat.

I think we average a good 6-8 of those per game.
Let's see.

1. Throwing the ball away with 35 seconds left in the 1st half when we could have held for the last shot and tied the game.

2. Both of Woolridge's 3pt attempts (got benched).

3. Tyler's last 3pt attempt when we're up 4 and have been killing them inside.

4. Prince's offensive foul.

5. Williams' intentional foul (got benched).

6. Hopson twice not looking where he was throwing the ball - lob attempt in the 1st half and backwards toss OOB in the 2nd half (at least got benched the 2nd time).

As bad as today was, all the gnashing of teeth about missing the NCAA Tournament is kind of funny. Win the four remaining home games and they're in the field. It's not like there are a plethora of teams with great resumes fighting for the last 7-10 at large spots.

Here's an indication of how far NCAA bball has regressed.

If UT plays as expected the rest of the season, they'll get at least an 8 seed in the tournament.

In 1990 (I believe), UNC was an 8 seed. On that team was Scott Williams, Rick Fox, Hubert Davis, King Rice, Pete Chilcutt and George Lynch. That team beat Oklahoma, the #1 overall seed in the second round.

This Tennessee team would get stomped by that UNC team.

That reminds of UNC's team that had an 8-seed in 2000. What an ugly memory.

How many games has Tyler Smith blown this year? I think this is the fourth one. That dumbass three point shot he took under one minute cost us the game. All we had to do was go inside, score a layup, and it's a six point game, game over...regardless of how crappy we played defense all day or the remaining possessions!!!!!! PATHETIC!

As bad as this loss was we are still in the picture. I think those that are counting us out think we will lose to Kentucky, SC, and Florida on the road. Those teams have been just as inconsistent as us and we can win one may be two of those games. This was a horrible loss though. No way to paint a rosy picture on it.

The problem is this is not a basketball Team. This is a bunch of individuals who care more about how fancy they look than about winning games. It just seems like it's all about style with these guys. No heart-no team. I think they could care less who they are playing for. They don't move on offense. It's pitch the ball around the perimeter until there is 5 seconds left on the clock then have to make a desperation shot. They would not consider wasting energy on defense that might rob them of that highlight 360 between the legs reverse dunk or more likely that no look OOB pass that usually happens. Give me people with less talent and more heart because great talent with no heart just sucks.

I would have to think that at least one more SEC road win would be required. If they win the four home games and lose all four road games, that put UT at 18-12 overall, 9-7 in the conference going into the SEC tournament, and we all know how well that generally goes. Now, granted, all four of the road games are winnable, especially since Kentucky has completely gone into the toilet, but still... Buzz thought he was a lock for the Dance with a 9-7 conference record one year, and got denied. (that team, of course, lost in the first round of the SEC tournament to Auburn in one of the ugliest games of basketball I can remember.)

This team is lazy and would not be worth watching if I wasn't a Vol fan.

The thing about it is that the opposite is the very reason, besides of course the change in style, the fans have turned out during the Pearl era. It was so refreshing to see a team hustle like Pearl's did, especially after the Green/Buzz Ball years, which were plagued and defined by quitting. Seems like we're back in those days, where the effort is way down.

That team was left out because Higgins became ineligible and the Committee knew they were cooked.

1. A gutless effort results in a loss to an atrocious team. Enjoy the trip home, Vols. You got what you deserved.
2. Allowing Rasheem Barrett to rebound the missed free throw at the end of the game defines this team. It just doesn't matter enough to them.
3. I'm pretty sure there is not a perimeter player in the country who can't get to the basket at will against Tennessee. Cam Tatum and Scotty Hopson are a Get Well card to struggling wings.
4. JP Prince manages to ruin an otherwise great performance with a mindless offensive foul. The number of awful plays this team makes is mind numbing.
5. At least now we can stop worrying about accomplishing in the regular season. With the remaining schedule, this team is out of contention.
6. That is the worst conference loss of Bruce's tenure. Totally inexcusable.
7. Great win for Cincinnati. The Bearcats are now squarely in the NCAA hunt.
8. Georgetown, on the other hand, is in trouble. Given their remaining schedule, the Hoyas are in danger of landing in the NIT.
9. The Fighting Irish are Notre Done. They aren't even an average team now.
10. People continue to overlook Villanova. That is a serious mistake.

I bet Notre Dame ends up making the tournament.

.

Great memory, TennNC! Btw, here's the final 8 seconds of that game. YouTube - Rick Fox last second shot upsets #1 Oklahoma 1990 NCAAs
