it just wasn't that long ago where "Tennessee" and "NCAA Tournament" had no business being mentioned in the same breath.

if that's as bad as it gets under Pearl...........well, ok.:eek:k:

Okay but when can we stop being satisfied with just making it to a 64 teamed tournament?

Yes but just as many were whining about how we were screwed in our seeding and all that. Apparently we weren't.

I thought our 9 seed was fair considering the way our boys lost to two lesser teams, in Bama and Miss St., within a week's span.

oh i know, i was just saying this was his worst season and the first season his team didn't live up to expectations, and if this does become his worst seasons at UT, will be fine. I was just saying that people were saying "bad" season, yet this would have been the best season under Peterson

Add Okie State to the lesser teams list...........They start four guards. Let me say that again "FOUR GUARDS", and we shoot 33 three pointers as opposed to pounding it down low ALL GAME LONG. Did it not work in the first 10 minutes of the game? Assinine!

We are paying Pearl far too much money to be a program that's satisfied with just getting into the tournament every year. He's being paid like an elite coach, so I think it's fair to hold him to a higher standard than just "Be better than Buzz Peterson."

This team came out of the gate with a "swagger" they had not earned, and it seemed like they retained it the whole way. I believe you have to have a high level of confidence to play great, in any sport, but this team had never earned it.

This team lacked point guard play, and any consistant outside shooting. It was also evident early in the year, that this team could not play the trapping up tempo style. I will take the smaller, scrappier guards back that can shoot, and keep their feet in front of people.

Seeing Ryan Wittman hitting jumpers for Cornell makes me feel old. His father is one of my all time favorite players.

...except I am older as I remember Randy Wittman when he starred at Indinapolis Ben Davis!! Great guy and a great Hoosier basketball player. And, I might add, I always felt he was a pretty good coach. He was on my short list when Mike Davis left I.U., but for some reason he is partial to the NBA game.

All I got to see of this game was about 4 1/2 minutes right before half on my lunch break....It looked like many of the other games I've seen, missed shots by Tyler Smith, mainly, at point blank range.....

Is he seriously thinking of turning pro??...I don't see it....

I'm trying to think of how many players have been shown the door or left the program for various reasons since CBP arrived....Help me out...

Ramar Smith..Duke Crews...Marques Johnson, the Passley kid Pearl brought with him....Who else????.....

Point is do you guys think any of those kids would have helped this season??

I'm happy the Vols are at least getting to the tournament and I haven't forgotten the lean years but it is about time to be taking it to the next level.......

Dude, he put bad in quotation marks. Do you not know what that means?

And please....stop with the "I guess we'll get Buzz/Wade/Jerry back" bullcrap. I'm starting to think that's all some of you can say, and if it is, then that should tell you something.

that's fair, but would you not also agree that this program is headed in a far better direction than it was headed before his arrival?

I mean we're still talking about a program that hadn't won any significant chammpionship in 30-40 years. in year three, he delivers a reg season c'ship and has two sec e wins. Hell, we were ranked #1 for the first time in TN basketball history....not that that matters, but just sayin'.

are there better coaches? yeah, i can name several i'd take over Peral right now. but for this program at this point in its history, he's been perfect as far as i'm concerned.

Like i said in another thread, i'm happy to be disappointed in TN basketball now, whereas before, i really could have cared less. the expectations are higher, for good reason. and Pearl is the reason for that. i'm not willing to overlook that in year 4.

at what point do the glaring coaching issues become a problem?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

A lot of this is definately Pearl's fault. No one can deny that. However, just like the CBS article stated, these group of guys are just tough to coach. We'll see if Pearl can turn it around with this same group. It should be interesting next year.

All ego driven studs are tough to coach. Some semblance of an effort would have helped.

The old coaching axiom of "you're sitting on the bench next to me" when a player doesn't do what he is coached to do works very well for most competitive athletes.

We don't go there because our #2 idiot is busy working his genius rotations.

Absolutely. But it's one thing to say, "Hey, we hired that guy from Milwaukee and he turned our crappy program around! We're just happy to be getting to the tournament consistently!" It's another thing entirely to start paying that guy from Milwaukee as much as the top coaches in the game. You quit being the promising up-and-comer when they start paying you as much as the top guys in your profession.

I didn't expect to be in the Final Four in year 4 or anything, but if we're going to pay a coach championship-level money, then I expect to see signs that he is indeed the guy who's going to build the program up to that level. And after four years of consistently crappy half-court defense and erratic half-court offense, I just have to wonder if Pearl's ceiling as a coach isn't a whole lot lower than what we're paying him for.

It is business as much as anything. He comes in, lights a fire under a dead program, and then fills a 21,000 seat arena most every night. If, he starts struggling enough that attendence, excitement, and merchandise drops then you will see a problem. We as fans, see it as a win/ loss issue.
