That's true, but he has gained some acclaim for being the lone genius behind our rotations.

If Pearl were more concerened about winning than keeping the gaggle of sycophants on his bench employed, he'd draw one of the names out of a hat, fire them, and hire Rick Brunson. Then, he'd repeat the process and hire Jay Spoonhour.

Pearl has improved the program--but I was not impressed by his coaching this year AT ALL. This team should have improved rather significantly, partly because of their out-of-conference schedule--and they did not get better AT ALL. Indeed, they ended the year with some pathetic, lame losses. This game was typified this bunch: Terrible defense, WAY too many three-point shots against an undersized team--and they let the other team's best player drive all the way to the rim on their last shot--SOMETHING YOU CAN NEVER DO IN BASKETBALL. He might beat you, but you don't let their best player go to the rim. Where was the double-team, the help, the court awarness? And of course a lame last attempt by UT---another 3-point heave. Pathetic. It's one thing to lose, but do be stupid doing it. This group reminded me of last year's UT offense: They'd get 9 yards on first down and then were punting on forth and 1.

This team is hard to watch even for us novice basketball minds. Thanks for all your reports hat! Maybe you should save em and just repost next year. I also appreciate your patience with my limited bb knowledge.

i've also enjoyed all the reports and hope they continue next year.

Wow, hat. Did you really just compare Jerry Green to Bruce Pearl? That may be your worst analogy ever. I'd say a 30 win season, a number one ranking, an SECC game, five tournament wins, and two Sweet 16's trump anything 420 did.

It wasn't an analogy. It was simply a dose of reality for the simpletons who act as if Pearl is Naismith. Making the NCAA Tournament four straight years, in and of itself, is no big deal. It's been done by two guys before Tanning Bed Bruce arrived.

How was it not an analogy?

Pearl's book of work at a school with as little basketball tradition at Tennessee is impressive. Period.

I'm not putting him among basketball's elite just yet, but he's done an exceptional job at a place that four years go was considered a coaching graveyard.

Naismith was a pretty poor coach...

An analogy would be a more complete comparison. I'm simply saying four straight NCAA trips does not warrant deification.
The rest of your post is a perfectly reasonable position to take.

Any reasonable Tennessee fan hasn't 'deified' Pearl.

Fair enough.

If UT will pay me what they're paying Tony Jones to bring in Tatum and Williams for Hopson and Chism after the first media timeout of every damned game, then bring in Tabb and Negedu (or occasionally Woolridge, you know, to REALLY mix it up) for Maze and Tyler after the second media timeout, I'll quit my job tomorrow and go buy an orange tie, assuming it's on sale.

I hate to say this, as a loyal Tennessee fan, but I'm kinda glad this season is over for us. Some of the s*** I saw this year made me want to hit someone. JP shooting 3's, Brian Williams not being physical enough, although he did see a bit of improvement in the later games. Mr. Scotty "One and Done" Hopson didn't exactly prove himself to be so, although I do think he could be a good player one day.

Negedu didn't exactly see the time I thought he should see either. Maybe Bruce didn't feel that he was ready for a whole lot of minutes? I don't know.

However, this season showed how much that the program has made a turn for a better. We're all, including myself, disappointed in this year. However, during the Buzz Peterson years, this season would have been called a success. I'm not making out B. Pearl to be some kind of legend of coaching. But, he's raised expectations markedly from the previous regime.

Better luck next year though. One more thing though. Can anyone tell me if Tyler Smith has made up his mind as to what he wants to do next year?

I for one am hoping Negadu sees much more time next year. Personally I'm starting to hope the Brian Williams experiment is over. He's going to have to improve a ton if he's ever going to be a consistent contributor, especially on the offensive end. The guy couldn't hit a point blank shot for anything, and he STILL takes the ball down low every time he gets it down low. Not to mention I'm pretty sick of watching him complain after every foul that's called on him.

I will never understand Tyler not driving straight to the basket on the last play. He either ties the game up, gets and-one for the win, or puts it on the refs to make an impossible call in a tourney game.

Anyone talking of Tyler being an NBA player - look at that play. Juniors with savy don't dribble around the three point line and take a desperation shot.

This is what I've been thinking ever since the game ended. with 4.5 seconds left there's plenty of time to drive, get the easy deuce or get fowled and take you 100% charity stripe self to the ft line. If you are going for the win, dish to Tatum, who had the hot hand from downtown.

When they ran the inbound for Tyler and he got it and turned up court, there was no doubt in my mind he was going straight to the basket. Then, for some reason, he pulls up, dribbles around in front of the bench and heaves a prayer up.

I couldn't believe what I had just seen. I've seen Tyler display his "will to win" before, but he didn't have it much this season.

I think that was the intended play, but if you watch it the OK ST player defended the pass too well, and Tyler just kinda had to throw one up.

Absolutely. But it's one thing to say, "Hey, we hired that guy from Milwaukee and he turned our crappy program around! We're just happy to be getting to the tournament consistently!" It's another thing entirely to start paying that guy from Milwaukee as much as the top coaches in the game. You quit being the promising up-and-comer when they start paying you as much as the top guys in your profession.

I didn't expect to be in the Final Four in year 4 or anything, but if we're going to pay a coach championship-level money, then I expect to see signs that he is indeed the guy who's going to build the program up to that level. And after four years of consistently crappy half-court defense and erratic half-court offense, I just have to wonder if Pearl's ceiling as a coach isn't a whole lot lower than what we're paying him for.
that i agree with.
