The Pembroke Postgame Report.

Except that Hall will foul out before the 2nd tv timeout.

Defnsively, we are horrid in two particular areas, allowing guards to penetrate the lane and help side defense on the pick and rolls. Arkansas molested our guys with the high pick at the top of the key, it was embarrassing. I've said for years that Pearl's teams suck donkey balls at this.

Harris, for all his positives, is a horrid low post defender. on a number of occasions today, he allowed a player to dribble from the wing to the lane without any resistance at all. He was screwed at this point, of course. I'll cut him some slack, though, he probably didn't have to play defense until he got to Knoxville and is still learning.

All in all, I've just come to expect that this is a team that will be up and down the entire year and resemble the seasons from '06-'07 and '08-'09.

Solid post.

1. Tennessee is now officially the Denver Nuggets of college basketball. They are a bunch of headcases and halfassers who only show up ready to play when it fits their personal agendas.
2. The final possession looked like five year olds at recess. It was an utter disaster.
3. This team's ballhandling is an affront to the game. Scotty Hopson's inability to simply dribble the ball is disgraceful.
4. NBA scouts had to love seeing Marshawn Powell use Tobias Harris as a turnstile. If a decent SEC player spins you like a top, just imagine what guys in the league can do.
5. Joe Dean had the worst day ever for an analyst. You should at least pretend to have done some prep work.
6. Brian Williams is a cancer. The only thing worse than his constant whining is his offensive game.
7. I can't believe coaches continue to allow Williams to crush their point guards with blind picks. Sooner or later, someone is going to man up and instruct their center to use an elbow to turn Big Bumbler's nose to dust.
8. Colorado is starting to click. That what happens when a new coach finally figures out it's time to unleash the two future pros in his backcourt.
9. Georgetown is in the middle of their annual regular season vacation. They are almost as flighty as Tennessee.
10. There is a silver lining. WIns like this may delude Arkansas into retaining Pelphrey.

Is it bad that I thought this exact thing when I heard the news?

Williams absolutely kills us on ball screens. If Hall knew he was going to get significant minutes, he'd probably tone it down a little on the fouls.

Nobody knows how to hedge on the picks, it drives me nuts. A solid big should be able to drive the ball handler well beyond the arc. I'm sick of seeing a frantic big give the little jab step and then try to recover his man.

Watching Hall, I don't know if he's able to tone it down. He's so awkward with his fouls, almost like he can't help it.

Williams was so bad at it early that we actually hard switched every high screen and got killed for it.

Bottom line: he isn't athletic enough to do what he needs and hasn't played long enough to have any real feel for what to do. Tack onto that apparently weak defensive coaching and you have the makings of a disaster.

To your earlier point about allowing guards to turn the corner, it was freaking brutal all freaking day. Looked like we were defending Iverson or something.

The guards penetrating is absolutely killing us and I thought we would be much better than we are. Goins, in particular, has mysteriously regressed and the only guy who isn't a revolving door at this point is Bone. I almost prefer to have us play a sagging defense to mask these deficiencies. I grew up playing a Dick Bennett defense and we didn't even pick up guys until the 3 point line.

Honestly, we're long enough to press and let guys get by, but our big guys foul like wild men. It doesn't help that we're asking everyone to cover for a burnt or lazy defender on almost every trip. Frustrating because we've shown the ability to actually do it right.

Goins and Golden have regressed and our wings are always spotty.

Are you implying Internet Forbes isn't really some sort of Don Casey/Dick Harter/John Bach type defensive mastermind? Balderdash.

I think all of it comes down to effort and maturity, which is too often in short supply on this particular team. Too many of the older guys are pouters and babies when times get difficult and the young guys aren't ready to take over yet. However, to look at the half full part, I do like the demeanor of the younger guys much more than Williams, Hopson, etc., which should be beneficial in the future.

Which ones?

Every one that doesn't mope up and down the court.

Tyler Summitt has more pep in his step grabbing Gatorade bottles than Hopson and Williams.

JMO, IMO. Can't speak for Unimaine, though.

Golden, Harris and McRae, for sure. I can't remember any of them pouting or showing incredulity at every foul called. Much more business-like.

I haven't seen McRae playing enough to draw any long-term predictions on him.

He's not pouting on the bench, either, which a good sign for someone who's 18-19 and used to being a star. Like I said, the body language of the underclassmen is far better than the upperclassmen's, which is not good for the present.

I don't know that complaining and showing incredulity is the problem--pouting definitely is. Which is to say, if we could have JP Prince back right now, I'd take him. Chism even more so.

I still can't figure out why s.pearl. doesn't play the whole game then when time is ticking away and we need points this coaching staff runs him out there.
Don't get me started on vincent 2.0....

Did anybody think 12 months ago we would be missing JP Prince's attitude? Anybody at all?

Lock the team up in TBA all week, without contact from the outside world, and tell them they are playing a top25 team every day. They'll win them all this way.

That half filled Bud Walton Arena was really rocking today. It was an act of courage to even stay in the game in such a hostile environment.

Now that their fans know they won't go winless in the SEC, perhaps more will show up for future games. After all, they still have potential wins with Auburn and LSU.
