The PHOTOGRAPHY Thread

Well, admitadly- I'm all canon, but I can appreciate Nikon.
The only problem with puting a 400 and using the dx sensor is that you lose the added dof because of the crop sensor and you get decreased resolution because of said bird as compared to having an 800 on a full frame sensor. I say that, but i'm an editorial and wedding photographer so I never have anything longer than my 70-200 2.8 in my bag. I love to talk gear though!

VSCOcam was released for the iphone today...I use VSCO presets to edit my professional photos..you should pick it up.

This is now a photography thread.

The head photo guy in the AD just sold his older Nikon 800 5.6... manual focus of course. He used it to shoot baseball from center field. For s**ts and giggles, I put it on a D300s with a 1.4x TC and shot a softball game from the soccer stadium. :)

We have a 400/2.8 and a 200-400/4, both of which are fine for most sports on a full-frame. We used to have a 300/2.8 500/4, 600/4 as part of a loan program but had to give them back. So we really need something longer come fall for football. I REALLY miss the 300 though. Great length for most sports, fast, tack sharp, took TC's well, and is hand-hold-able for short periods of time.

Crop factor is nice in some circumstances, but we only have a D300 and a D300s, and the AF precision just doesn't compare to our D3s's.

Canon is cool I guess. :p Yeah pretty typical of the type of photographer you are.

With today's equipment I don't think you lose much quality on the smaller sensors. Especially compared to the amount of f-stop you are looking to save. Obviously it all depends on the equipment you have available. It can get expensive, so most have to do with what they have.

So are you working with the 5D MII? Is your 70-200/2.8 IS 1 or 2?

Yeah I'm sure it'll get moved soon or someone will come on trying to bring it back on subject :hi:

Do you have a pic of the softball game you shot with the 1.4X on the 800??? Would be nice to see.

So what r y'all looking to buy come football season?

If the D300s AF precision were anywhere near the D3s then it would be crazy to spend the extra 5 or so grand...

i'm not sure about nikon, but canon is pretty good about sending me whatever I want to play with as a part of their CPS program....you should try and get into that! That 800 comment made me lol btw.

Yeah, we're shooting with MkII's for now, but i'm hoping to the upgrade to the 5dMKII's soon to get the new autofocus and metering systems. Using the 2.8 ISII....the 1 was a steller lens, but the color profile in the 2 is just that much better.

The D3s is a great camera. Funny that you guys are Nikon in the AD office....usually sports guys are canon and more lifestyle/editorial people like myself are Nikon, or moving to it.

My keeper rate was abysmal. :lolabove: I'll see if I can find them next time I'm in the office. Quality wasn't great since I shooting into the sun, and focusing was extremely difficult, but it was still fun to shoot 1200 and 1680mm.

Not sure what they're going to buy, if anything. They're in the process of hiring a new head photographer, so he/she will likely decide what to do. I'm just here for the ride.

True on the D300s. If the D400 will indeed be DX, I hope they upgrade the AF quite a bit. Not saying the D300s is bad, but when you're used to shooting a D3s, it's tough going back.

I always thought that as well. I haven't been around during football season, but from what I've seen at other events, there are a lot of Nikon sports shooters in this region. My personal kit was Canon before I started doing this early in the year, but I'm in the process of upgrading to a better Nikon kit.

I had no idea this even existed.

Anyway, here's some of my favorite sports shots from the last month or so.

I need to hurry up and get my personal kit together (switching from Canon to Nikon) so I can get out and do some non-sports stuff.

Don't think that the guys giving 100k a year and doing it for tickets......

those giving in that range are looking for their name on a building somewhere or maybe a plaque hung up in the stadium.

along with many other perks...

good stuff man. I really like you're dof control. It doesn't look like you're just shooting wide open all the time which is good.

Very true. Nikon is trying to make up for stepping in it with the sports guys back in the 80s.

Yeah I'm sure AF was mega slow but always fun to test things out like that. The owner of my go to dealer got Nikon to lend him a 1200-1700/5.6-8 when the Branch Davidians deal in Waco went down in the 80s. He partnered up with the Dallas Morning News (one of his accounts), and they took some crazy close shots. DMN are Canon guys though.

Hey if you (and you too crazyguy) are looking to upgrade at some point you need to contact my guy, Eugene, over at Competitive Cameras in Dallas. He's the largest Canon/Nikon Dealer in Texas if not the South/Southwest. Anything you need he'll have it first, and the most in the first allotments. His dad started the biz and he's been in it since he was in his moms womb. Probably the best there is in photography knowledge. Give him a Go Vols! when you e-mail him, and he'll know who referred you. Can't beat the mom and pop type service you'll get from them over there.

Sorry to all who have been bored by this...

No AF... the 800 is all manual. Room for error is non-existent... I don't know how guys shot sports with long MF lenses back in the day. That's awesome about the 1200-1700. I'd love to see one in person some day.

I'll keep Competitive Cameras in mind. A D7000 is in my future. :good!:

d300 sucks

d700 is is goood man

not a lot a pixals but same focus as your d3 and same sensor unlike the 300

anyway

300mm is the sheet man that lens is easy on the arm, with the 300mm f4 nikon you get pretty much the same but the hey hey they won't update and add VR to the fooker

New Nikon lenses rock....they are the **** man.... give us a 300mm f4 VR give us a 400mm f/5.6 vr

why don't we have these?

we have the ISO to do it now .... who the hell wants to carry around a 8# lens man..... 2.8 >>> love the isolation but hate the weight...... give us some light weight quick or see see the DSLR go to the way of the buggy whip

but then we go to full frame and loose the crop factor

so you say well

wow.
You're right though, there isn't a huge need for a 2.8 when shooting in daylight, but there are night games as well in most sports.

D700 is a fine camera. We have D3S's though, as well as a beater D3. The D800 is worlds above the D700 though. The detail in those giant files is jaw-dropping.

I agree on the weight though. That's why I often grab the 200-400/4 instead of the 400/2.8.
An updated 300/4 would be nice. For sports, VR doesn't really matter, but it would be useful for other stuff.

Solid pics :good!: so ur doing the switch huh?? Fun times that's for sure. I remember when canon dropped the MII on everyone and a bunch of Nikon people switched. That camera changed the game completely. Crazy the effect it had on the industry as a whole. I'd say 70%, if not more by now, of all tv commercial are shot by a DSLR.

The d800 better be worlds ahead. It took them for ever to upgrade the d700. The 700 maintained its value though for so long it's crazy. That's the difference between Nikon and canon guys right now though. Nikon guys didn't care as much about the video. The upgrade had to have video but they dont care if it didn't. As long as the actual picture features were better.

i'm getting a couple of 5dMkIII's this summer when they fix some of the light leak issues.

I'll have my guy let me know when new fixed batches start coming in, and let u know. Wonder if it's going to be a simple firmware update fix...

One of my huntin buddies is one of the main guys at The DMN and they r canon guys over there. I'll ask him what he thinks about those issues. Trust me these guys don't spend time on forums, and they know more about this kind of stuff then 99.999% of the folks on there.

I'm like u when it comes to getting the new stuff. I wait for all the kinks to get taken out.

Yep. With basically unlimited access to a bunch of topnotch Nikkor glass, it just made sense to switch. Plus, if we have multiple people covering an event, like football, there aren't enough bodies to go around, so having my own will be nice.
My budget is tight, and I don't make money doing this (not sure if I ever plan to), so my personal kit will be small and slowly put together. So far I have a 12-24/4 and a 50/1.8G. D7000 is coming soon. Still trying to decide on the rest. Maybe a 85/1.8 and/or a third-party dedicated macro, like the Tokina 100 or Sigma 150, since I'm going to miss my Canon macro. I'm not even going to bother with zooms until I can afford another one with a pretty gold ring.
