The Play Calling Against Oklahoma Thread

People that think play calling is the problem tonight have the football IQ of a grape.

They are not executing this offense properly. Offensive Line play is pitiful for the most part (special thanks to Doofus).

We do seem predicable at times. Don't understand us not using our talented tight ends in the passing game last night. We don't get our fastest skill guys on the edge enough, and I am not talking about a poorly blocked jet sweep that gets blown up in the backfield. We seem to like like to try to jam our backs up the middle, only to run into a wall of defenders. The screen game was wide open most of the night... I only remember us gashing them once on a nicely executed screen pass to Hurd.

This every year. Gotta love all the experts here at play calling. I guess that's why you're on a forum talking about it and not actually making calls on a sideline. They are playing to their strengths. In case you didn't notice, Oklahoma's d-line was brutal. What did you expect, us to line up and play smash mouth football with them? We are not yet equipped for that. When are all you that are complaining gonna stop whining and realize that we are in the process of getting better? This team will be better as the season progresses.

I feel like I'm taking CRAZY PILLS - YouTube

So, no dissent unless you're a coach or until UT is perennial top-10. That certainly is an unconsidered strategy; what could go wrong?

Is terrible.

Its not the play calling. You did see how many time Oklahoma hit Worley didn't you? Its the O-line and all the freshmen. We will be ok later on. I don't know how you expect this O-line to block Oklahoma after what the Sooners did to AJ and Alabama last year in the bowl game. Stracker has 3 sacks against Bama. That's what experience will do for you. Oklahoma has a lot of experience. We will beat them next year when they come to Knoxville.

It really wasn't, that was dumb luck that it was a tip ball pick 6.

It was dumb luck that Worley stared down the WR and threw it/forced it into triple coverage when he could have tucked it and slid to the one yard line and lived to fight another play to get it in the endzone. I love Worley's foxy last night, but he is a senior....

I think the play calling wasnt bad for the most part. Until we got in the redzone. For instance, when we were 3rd and 2 with 11:13 left in the 4th on the 4 yard line, OK had 8 guys in coverage. We had five receivers and he threw a pick 6 for 100 yds. Why wasnt that recognized? Couldnt we have just ran the ball twice? Jalen hurd usually falls forward at least 1-2 yards. We even had a chance for a 1st down inside the 2 but instead worley throws into triple coverage. That was possibly the worst play call I have ever seen. But I must say Im really excited to see Hurd flash signs of the future.

^^ agreed about the speed.

If you have a consistent failure at one position, your play calling is hamstrung (and you become predictable). If you have consistent failure across your entire o-line (outsized, out-experienced), you shrink to a very few choices... calling anything else is playing roulette.

Get that o-line tightened up, and then we'll work on the play calling.

Don't forget - continue ignoring tight-end sets, too, until the o-line is "tight". No sense even trying to give your offensive backfield any chance until the line is tight.

I can find no excuse for an empty backfield on 3rd and 2, and I can't understand why you wait until 3rd and 17 to dial up North. your proven absolute most proven point producer.

Exactly.

The OC couldnt win the game last night with what we field.

But that doesnt mean he "gets it" either.

If our OC called quick slants instead of too many conventional pass plays Worley would have not gotten hit nearly as much. With Pig who is experienced by now, plus North, Malone, and Smith who are extremely talented that strategy should have been possible - and after completing few of those plays their line would have likely backed of from always blitzing.

Watched a bit back and forth of the Ark ST vs Miami game and I would take Ark's OC any day of the week. They have less talent on offense but know how to maximize the talent they have. Our OC seemed to be scared to open it up last night, which is actually the exact time to open it up because we had nothing to lose. Typical three and out play calling on the first drive like we were scared to death and everyone in the house knew what we would call. We all know and saw that our O line was watching the D run right past them, but there were zero slants and TE dumps. Not trying to be an armchair QB, just thinking logically... one of the biggest keys was to sustain drives and move the chains. There is nothing wrong with a 4-5 yard easy slant and dive on first down, another quick dink to the TE, then you are 3rd and 2, which is managable. We found ourselves by predictable play calling, facing 3rd and double digits almost all night.... I love our team, the fight and positive attitudes, with tons of young talent, but was extremely disapointed with the play calling. I hate it that even though Butch is doing everything right, everyone seems scared or is deemed "negavol" for pointing out some obvious deficiencies in one area of the overall staff he has in place. No one is perfect, but I would hope that he is reviewing the game tape and seeing where there could be some major improvements in play calling. If he does not see anything wrong, I hate to say it, but we might have bigger potential issues down the road.

The bottom line is that we need a QB... Our offense will be much more effecient when our qb play improves. It is very easy to gameplan against an offense like ours. The play calling is a reflection of the talent at the qb position Two picks in the end zone isn't playcalling, it is poor play by Worley

We have a QB. He's neither a Manning nor a stiff. The Croom pick is all - 100% - on Croom who allowed himself to be abused by a smaller guy with inferior position. The other a bad decision kinda like the brain farts Peyton has in big games but compounded by the OC putting him in that position after rushing the ball successfully to get to 3rd/goal with 2 yards.

Manning would also die behind this line against that defense.

It would be funny to sit behind most of these guys here and watch them break down the video from the game....most would be totally embarrassed at just how little they really know about the game much less the incredibly difficult task of game planning not to mention in game play-calling!!!

Sure, you can have an opinion but I can also call you out for expecting way too much too soon. This is the style of offense they are teaching. With the right parts in place, it can be great. Were there times when I wish we would line up under center and hand the ball to Hurd? Of course, but that's not Butch's offense. It's not the right time to criticize. If we don't grow and see positive development this year or especially next year then raise your questions. You got to give these kids and coaches the opportunity.

I agree . There is not offense or magic play that we could have run to over come the failure of our freshman offensive line. The play calling did probe the defense : they threw short , attacked deep , ran inside ran outside , screens, bubbles . It came down to the fact that they were able to play tight / press on the receivers taking away underneath routes ..no need to defend deep because their rush would be there long before it developed. So all the short routes were covered and the run gaps were flooded and we had no time to get anything deep. People that are proposing 'slants' and posts into that underside mess have no idea . The ones that talk about packing it in and going single wing may have been onto something

Thank you! Glad to see I'm not the only one that noticed. I thought Worley needed to keep it 4-5 times per game to keep the defense honest. He didn't keep it once! So your description of our running game is exactly why it was so putrid particularly in the first half. It makes Jalen Hurd's 2nd half effort that much more impressive.

Not sure why this keeps coming up . The QB does not keep it and run in this offense . There is a zone read ...but it is by the RBs. They run alot of dive plays and the RB have a 2 or 3 gap option. When the QB pulls the hand-off , he pulls up and passes into a layered west coast system . The QB 'keeper' is not a read here and not a real part of this offense. An occasional QB counter is run ...but it is a design run and it is a one or two time a game thing . It is a simple counter to an empty H gap and is by design ...not QB read . The H gap was not open all night

Whatever you 'zone read' guys are perceiving and hoping for is not going to happen ...it is just not part of this offense.

It's reasonable to ask why you throw three downs inside your own five, when rushing got you there and their defense is clearly tired, and why there was no adjustment to the jailbreak occurring every play. I haven't seen anyone that expected us to run power football.

I admit I skipped most of the "should've done this " crap from desk jockeys and armchair quarterbacks. There is no playbook for games in which your online is having zero success. As for the play on the 2 yard line, watch NFL games today, you will see plenty of 4 wide sets with throws into the end zone from inside the 5. I guess some of you somehow got overlooked for that head coaching position huh? You can take every single football game ever played in the history of the sport and find plays throughout the game that in hindsight seem like bad calls. I would like to see Worley keep it more to keep the defense honest, I'd like to see more mid range throws over the middle, but that said, I'm not out there for hours every single day with these guys seeing what the coaches see. We played the number 4 team last night, and that's why we lost the game, simple as that.
