The playoff committee and force majeur.

Winning margins are not irrelevant in College Football.
All we had to do was beat SC like we were supposed to.
We didn't.
Neither TN nor Alabama are getting in the CFP.
So this whole debate is pointless.
Additionally I don't think we get in even with our 1 loss to GA.
Assuming all 4 teams win their conference games.

But punishing Tennessee by losing to SC by 25 is dumb. Bama loss to the team that loss to SC by 25 Lmao. The debate is pointless for the CFP but it’s not for bowls. Vols should be Sugar/Orange locked. But now there’s a chance we go to a Cotton bowl 99% people don’t want.

Bama could have easily been 8-4 as well.
We lost late and we lost badly.

I have seen a ton of teeth knashing around here about the committee not following its own rules.

I believe they actually did. They ranked the teams per their own rules to the letter - except they had to make an unusual exception due to never imagined circumstances. I believe this to be their force majeur clause- essentially meaning that a contract (or rules) should be abandoned in the case of unforeseen circumstances - 9/11 attacks, pandemic, etc disrupting the normal course of business.

There was an unforeseen and simply unimaginable event this year. I saw it in person with my own eyes.
The number five ranked team gave up 63 points to South Carolina. Two weeks ago. 63. South Carolina.
No way in hell any team that does such a thing can be considered for a playoff spot.
Force Majeur. Throw the normal rules out of the window. There wasn’t a rule already in place for this because the absurdity of it couldn’t be imagined.
No one on earth was alive in the 1903 when such a thing last occurred.

Just my .02

I can’t believe we have fans willing to type this stuff out.

It is not at all pointless when a CFB berth is still even a remote possibility and the jump down from Sugar to Cotton is pretty big.

No one arguing for a spot in the playoffs but the ranking of ALA ahead of UT is not defendable
This is my argument.
I dont think either two loss UT or two loss Bama “deserve” a playoff.
but I do think we should be ranked ahead of them.

Congrats on the completely meaningless math.

Well apparently the math mattered to the committee Chairman.

Tennessee football's blowout loss at South Carolina is an anchor to UT's ranking in the College Football Playoff, committee chair Boo Corrigan said Tuesday.
Corrigan said the 25-point loss "really weighed" with the committee as it debated the bodies of work between Tennessee and Alabama, which ranked a spot ahead of the Vols despite a head-to-head loss.

Why Tennessee football is ranked behind Alabama in CFP rankings

To those not seeing why the gumps are ranked ahead of us - maybe this will help - if UT had lost another game and had a worse record would that make a difference ??
Because if so, that inexplicable loss to SC was worth two losses.

Tenn vs Ala next week on a neutral field. Who wins?
Oh St and USCw are media darlings. One of those 2 will be the 4th team in.
Wait until the bowl season is over , compare TN and Bama results, then there might be an argument of ranking order. Tenn is going to Orange Bowl. Who do you think the orange committee prefers. Oh St playing a dangerous game thinking they can sneak out of the Rose and automatically chose the Orange. Maybe they will be in Dallas?????

The comparison will be meaningless after the season is over and I don’t see what playing opponents from different conferences is really going to reveal about UT vs. Bama. What in the world are you talking about?

We lost to a team that beat a playoff contender and that loss was by about the same margin Ohio State lost and they barely dropped.

Another reason why it doesn't matter for non playoff bowls....how many players are going to sit out for their bowl games?

You pick Bama winning, argument over. You pick Tenn, well I’d like to take your bet.

Tennessee isn’t playing Bama on a neutral field next week. They did play earlier in the season. We won. They lost. We played the other team that beat them and ground them into dust.

Think about how much latitude it gives a committee to just do whatever they want with the rankings if they are just going to randomly project how a team will be without a player. We beat Bama without Cedric Tillman. A lot of people probably thought that wasn’t possible. And Bryce Young has already been hurt once this year. What if he tears up his shoulder again in the first quarter? Milroe wasn’t exactly a rockstar. The point is, Tennessee very well could win a rematch and the only data we have on the field tells us that UT > Bama.

Except 63 points by an unranked team over a Top 5 has never happened in 100 years. If it was a last second field goal loss, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
The 52 we scored on Alabama was the most they had given up since 1907 🤷‍♂️

But I guess Alabama deserves to be ranked ahead of us with the same exact record 🤷‍♂️

It has everything to do with how we beat Alabama and should be ranked ahead of them.
1669911359953.pngNothing in there, nor in the OP, is about beating Bama. The entire thing is about the ass-whipping by SC. Just because you want to talk about Bama doesn't mean my post was about them, nor what I was responding to.

Well how do they accommodate the overall lack of strength in the Big 10 this year when it comes to SOS calculations. They need to calculate the number members of each conference had in the CFP rankings and prorate the normal CFP SOS by those percentages. Should fit in their Force MANURE safety net too.
