I've been a fan and follower of the Lady Vols since 1974 but I confess I don't know if Holly is equipped to be the leader of this program....and that's a real question not an indictment....

Is there a reason other than loyalty that she was an assistant for 27 years?

Both programs, men's and women's, need to clean house. Kids would do alright if they had some quality coaching.

There are good athletes in the program but not good shooters. You need players that can shoot the basketball and have the ability to play defense. We have two or three players capable of this and a couple of weak links. In basketball there is also an intelligence factor you must learn from you mistakes seems out players make the same mistakes over and over again every game.

It is womens basketball. Not worth paying a ton of money to bring in a big name coach. Revenue return wouldn't make sense. Holly fits the mold. Loyal here so would coach cheaper than a proven winner coming in here.

UT is about the only program in the country that could pay the big money, they are far and away the leader in attendance. Holly took a team that was picked 5th in the league last year and won the league so I still think she's a decent coach, but when you have a top 5 recruiting class every year, you expect better results than they've been getting.

The importance of intelligence is often underestimated. It can make up for many other shortcomings. I agree that is a major concern for this team.

I don't think attendance is that big a factor anymore. The price of tickets is low, so attendance is a misleading indicator of financial success. TV revenue is a big factor and it doesn't seem like the LVs have much of a TV presence. The fact that Tennessee athletics is losing money is an indicator of the problems that exist.

In contrast, uconn has high def TV broadcasts of all their games. Those not shown on ESPN are available nationwide on the SNY network. This coverage is financially beneficial and also helps in recruiting. Recruits are exposed to uconn wherever they live.

So, Tennessee may not wish to spend more money on women's basketball. Already, they are paying Pat Summitt a significant salary. I'm wondering how cost effective that is. Perhaps it doesn't matter. The admin may care more about honoring Pat for the past than having future success.

NEVER hire the long-time assist'-coach. UT just does not know how to go after a good coach. That is why we are the SEC Sports Door-Mat.

Well, that certainly added a lot to the conversation. Talk about stupid posts!

Well said....I was trying to refrain from responding to Volfootball post because he has some difficulty with reading comprehension or something more significant....

Otherwise some very good replys and information to the 'question' I asked...thanks...

I do believe that the problem with CHW,is that she is going threw the growing pains to be the head coach of the Lady Vols, and it is showing up this year,I forget who said it,but she was the one that smoothed over CPS tuff ass attitude with the players and she needs to get over that, only time will tell if she can handle being the head coach or not,she needs to get a hold of this team and hold them accountable

like i said before,it is different from riding the bus to driving it,I personally hope she can improve and take this team to where we all want them to be,only time is going to tell

She said that we were going back and starting all over. Holly said only thing she knew to do was to go back to basics and get the team playing defense again. Let us hope she is successful. We can't afford but one more SEC loss if we want to be in the title hunt.

Fun to discuss but all those antics with the locker room and uniforms produced squat. The team she did that to I think is the one that lost to Ball State in the tourney. Time and effort would be better utilized teaching them how to run plays and pass the ball. They are lacking in both areas. It would also help to practice stopping penetration by teeny weeny guards. I'm sure they do all that but it's not translating to the court.

Gimmicks aren't going to make the Vols better. Smart, tough coaching will. I love PS but she stopped being a great coach about 2000. The program was sliding before she landed Parker and then resumed its slide after Parker left. One might argue that that proves the importance of superstar players. I would argue that superstars don't come along very often--and that you a program that has a bench full of top recruits ought to be very good even if it doesn't have any superstars.

If you can't stop guards from penetrating to the basket, then you've got serious defensive problems. The bigs have to have court awareness--known where the ball is, know the scoring potential (or lack thereof) of the player she is guarding. If a guard drives past one of our guards, others need to help. It's not exactly rocket science. We shouldn't let our bigs drift outside, or be pulled away from the basket, opening up space for guards to beat us. That would be dumb basketball.

Holly said today they have been working on stopping penetration and that she needed to make adjustments during the game. I think we can stop Mississippi State but further down the line can we stop Kentucky, South Carolina, LSU, Vandy, and Texas A&M. These are the biggest game we need to win all of them.
