The Recruiting Fix: Fixing a hole

"At the very least, it looks like we forced Florida to take a prospect (Riggs) that they might not have otherwise and use one of those spots which are so valuable under the new rules. Win for UT in my opinion."

lulz. the timing was all about LaMarcus Joyner committing a day or two before. Joyner was the only guy ahead of Riggs on our board so when he committed to FSU the other shoe dropped.

Florida getting yet another highly ranked CB (ESPN #72, Rivals #105, Scout #113) is definitely a win for UT. :)

This is silly. Riggs is as overrated of a prospect as exists this season.

that's funny. he's outstanding in coverage and while Joyner athletically has a higher ceiling, Riggs is a far better cornerback and defensive player than Joyner is right now. Joyner's a 5 star because of his athleticism and how dangerous he is with the ball in his hands but there's a very good reason why Riggs plays cornerback at STA and Joyner, who's smaller than Riggs, plays safety.

but hey don't let me stop you from drinking the Kool-Aid.

further lulz at the implication that "forcing Florida's hand" is also a win because of the signee limit.

Meyer's had much larger groups of departing players than this one and never even had a class of 28. even though it's highly unlikely Florida's 2010 class exceeds 25 players it's not like we would need the extra room under the limit anyway because Meyer doesn't ever exceed the 85 man scholarship limit like Saban and doesn't sign players who look like they won't qualify. of Meyer's 111 signees only two have failed to qualify and those two came down to the wire and just barely missed it (Dee Finley went to prep school for a semester and enrolled in the spring).

even further lulz that a school the caliber of Florida doesn't have a decent message board with decent recruiting info on it :birgits_giggle:

there's a free one out there with the best Gator info on the web. better info and more up to date news than the pay sites. i won't give out the address because it's currently free of trolls. you can call me a liar but I'm not making this up.

i come over here occasionally to get a good laugh at what new ridiculous notion you all have convinced yourselves of.

My mom would have liked your response about Matt Simms possibly committing soon. Kind of like "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"! As usual, your blog was the best read of the week. Thanks Sab.

:good!:

Sab excellent work!

Jose Jose and Morgan Moses both ate themselves out of immediate success at a school that could send them to the NFL.

You were right about J2 and everyone including me questioned you about him. Although I originally said he would not end up as part of the class, it was because of star gazing and nothing more.

Chaz Green and John Cullen? I would be very enthused with both, but losing Jose Jose means I would not be sad to get in on S. Coleman and D Robinson (who I know you are talking about next week) and finally drop Pair and tell Stone no thanks.

Hahhaah I know I know we are not dropping Pair ever and the coaches love him etc.

Thanks for all the great insight! You know more about recruiting than all of the people on talk radio. It is kind of depressing how little they know actually.

Swampy must not have seen the Brynes St. Thomas game if he likes Riggs that much. haha.

i watched the game and he blew an assignment or two but that was an anomaly. if you ask STA fans who their best player is more often than not you'll hear Riggs. Heck he was pretty much the only guy who played well when STA's 37 game winning streak ended at the hands of Manatee.

Wow. "Tiny" & "Tinier". Good luck with that with our tall WR's coming in. :hi:
not that the 6'2 and 6'3 guys y'all have on your roster and committed qualify as really big receivers but he wouldn't ever be assigned one of the really tall guys. those assignments will fall to our CBs like 6'2 Josh Shaw, 6'1 Jaylen Watkins, 6'1 Demar Dorsey and 6'2 Josh Evans. Heck Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins are only 5'11 and have no trouble covering 6'4 and 6'5 receivers and we've got even more good CBs around that size in 5'11 Travon Van, 5'10 Jeremy Brown and 5'11 Adrian Bushell.

5'9 Riggs will probably start out his career as a nickel and with his speed (e.g. fastest 40 at the US Army All-American Combine), coverage skills and a year or so in the weight room he could do very well for himself.

there are plenty of shorter CBs who've done very well and Riggs has the tools to get it done. if you were actually worried about tall receivers versus 5'9 and 5'10 CBs you'd be bemoaning a large chunk of your own CBs. perhaps it's you who should worry that your corners have to deal with the fleet-footed 6'6 Stephen Alli for the next four years.

Thanks, MH fan. And people were telling you you were crazy for not including Jose in your mocks.

Riggs' problem isn't necessarily his height. There are an abundance of small corners out there. His problem is his height combined with a low vertical leap. The successful corners out there jump around a 34-36" vertical. Riggs has a verified vertical of 29". He may help in the return game and on special teams, but he will be recruited over at CB. He's also closer to 5'7" than 5'9".
