The Recruiting Fix: Fixing a hole

Riggs' problem isn't necessarily his height. There are an abundance of small corners out there. His problem is his height combined with a low vertical leap. The successful corners out there jump around a 34-36" vertical. Riggs has a verified vertical of 29". He may help in the return game and on special teams, but he will be recruited over at CB. He's also closer to 5'7" than 5'9".
Rivals has his verified height at 5'9 so please stop with this "closer to 5'7" nonsense. He had one bad vertical jump at the Army Combine. Other places have his vertical listed either 35" or 36". Do you really think Florida's going to take a CB who's 5'7 and can't jump?

Why would the Vols have even offered if that was the case or every major recruiting site out there have him so highly ranked? Probably because he's a great athlete with great coverage skills.

He is Gerald Riggs' brother, for one thing. Don't know how hard our coaches were chasing him.

Riggs finally getting to commit was combination of Joyner to FSU and Dorsey grades issue.

HG makes it sound like Riggs is UF's consolation prize. Good luck with that. :p

I agree. It's rather strange that a 24 foot long jumper would have a relatively low vertical jump. He's also a hurdles champion. I think Riggs has pretty good hops.

You were saying?? Oh, but you were wrong. Clearly says 5'8". Did he have one bad measurement also? What else are you going to invent up?

Could struggle defending the jump ball and maintaining proper positioning versus today's taller, more powerful receivers. Will close the cushion fast, but isn't a guy who projects well as a hard Cover 2 corner who needs to consistently set the edge in run support at this time. Can get turned and does show he is susceptible to the double move at times. Can let receivers slip behind him at times, but has the quickness to recover in high school. Still projects

not that the 6'2 and 6'3 guys y'all have on your roster and committed qualify as really big receivers but he wouldn't ever be assigned one of the really tall guys. those assignments will fall to our CBs like 6'2 Josh Shaw, 6'1 Jaylen Watkins, 6'1 Demar Dorsey and 6'2 Josh Evans. Heck Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins are only 5'11 and have no trouble covering 6'4 and 6'5 receivers and we've got even more good CBs around that size in 5'11 Travon Van, 5'10 Jeremy Brown and 5'11 Adrian Bushell.

5'9 Riggs will probably start out his career as a nickel and with his speed (e.g. fastest 40 at the US Army All-American Combine), coverage skills and a year or so in the weight room he could do very well for himself.

there are plenty of shorter CBs who've done very well and Riggs has the tools to get it done. if you were actually worried about tall receivers versus 5'9 and 5'10 CBs you'd be bemoaning a large chunk of your own CBs. perhaps it's you who should worry that your corners have to deal with the fleet-footed 6'6 Stephen Alli for the next four years.

So just curious here, when Dorsey is supposed to cover Thompkins, Milton, or Ambles, which team will he be playing for? Cauz if you've checked his grades, you'd know he won't be wearin a Gator jersey when he tries to do that. :good!:

like i said before they aren't going to put him on the great big receivers. if he showed the ability in high school to do that he would be even more highly rated. possible deficiencies as a Cover 2 corner mean very little if you consider Florida's corners play man almost exclusively. so what if he bites on double moves in high school, Vance Bedford didn't develop Charles Woodson and wasn't the DB coach for the Chicago Bears for 6 years because of his winning personality.

It's funny how you guys were justifying turning him away with the same info I've given you here, but now that he's a take guy he's grown 2 inches and can leap a foot higher.

And then it takes you to a page where his verified height is 5'8. Clearly the 5'8" is what was verified. You're not talking to idiot homer Gator fans right now.
you do realize that these prospects don't participate in one combine and call it quits. the US Army Combine was almost a full year ago. since then Rivals has gotten another verified measurement at 5'9.

whoever the "you guys" refers to was not and is not me. those are the same kind idiots that try to say we never wanted a player when he goes somewhere else. that's not me.

i've liked Riggs this entire time. i liked Joyner (athleticism despite raw coverage skills) and Fulton (physicality) more but Riggs ain't no booby prize. once those guys made it clear they weren't going to be Gators you move on.

Yeah, but he was wearing high heels at the time. :)
