The Rock/Metal Thread

Nah he only filled in at drummer for about a year. They're actaully on their second drummer since then, Brooks Wackerman. They fired Arin Ilejay about 3 year ago.

Portnoy wanted to remain with A7X but they opted to go with a no-name guy. Personally I think that was a mistake as Portnoy was fantastic on Nightmare! I thought he was a great fit in the band. However the remaining members thought Portnoy was too established and his name would overshadow the A7X name as a band. Bullocks I say! He made them better and that's what was most important! As rare a talent as Portnoy is, when he says he wants to be in your band, by god you let him! They overthought that one IMO.

Portnoy is a drama queen. AX7 realized that and informed him that were going to get another drummer.

He very much likes the spotlight. In fact, there was interview with him that saw the other day where he said he sees himself as a frontman that plays drums. Lots of ego.

Welcome to the music biz. It's chock full of drama queens and egos. However what's rare is real talent and Portnoy is a rare talent. Like I said, he made A7X better. IMO nothing A7X has released since Nightmare has been as good.

Oh, I agree. I think he makes the players around him better. He’s a very musical drummer.

Meh, he was ok with A7X but I didn't think he made them any better. He was better than Ilejay but I think Wackerman has been just as good Pourtnoy with them.

Portnoy is good but he has ego and commitment problems to bands. The A7X gig from the beginning was to be temporary and Portnoy is the one that decided he wanted to stick around and A7X said no thanks. He ditched Dream Theater and then later wanted back in and they said no thanks (pattern forming here). He ditched Adrenaline Mob to start yet another band in The Winery Dogs, who IMO aren't really all that great.

New Stone Temple Pilots with their new lead singer Jeff Gutt. I have to say, he sounds pretty good and they've pulled an Alice In Chains a bit because he sounds similar to Scott Weiland.

I like it... Jeff's voice isn't quite as full as Weiland's was, but it works. He sounds just enough like Scott without trying to outright imitate him.

Yeah, it's simliar to AIC, sounds close enough that it keeps the same sound and he can do their older hits justice, but not so much that it sounds like he's doing an imitation.

New A Perfect Circle album dropping April 20th, Eat the Elephant.

Congrats to Disturbed, their 6th studio album Immortalized was certified platinum. They're also back in the studio working on new material.

While definitely not "hard rock" or "metal"...

The original Guns' lineup and what they put down was the anthem of my youth

You mean Guns N' Roses? If so I'd defintely label them hard rock.

I think most would consider them more Sleaze Rock, kinda in line with Motley and Skid Row, as opposed to "hard" rock like say a Mettalica.

They definitely had their own unique sound though, difficult to classify.

Appetite is still my favorite rock album of all time. Those riffs were so dirty.

I mean I guess; they did come out around that "hair metal" time but I always had them above that. Obviously not quite the same as a Metallica, although they did a major tour together in the early 90s when James was set on fire.
