The Rocky Top Spread

I love the spread. A team that can really run it and run it correctly , it is most difficult to defend. Will equalize talent level quickly, when ran correctly. Look what Oregon and Malzhan did with it . Kinda successful i would say. Lets face it, the power I formation is kinda outdated.

Love it...and we actually have a lot of players that will transition nice to a quick system:

Neal
Pig
Lane
Dallas
Watson
Young

Will all thrive!

I thought Butch said quite clearly at his initial presser that he did not like the word spread and that while he spread the players, he was running a pro-set, power football offense. I would take that to mean he isn't running a true spread offense. However, Urban Myer did not fare badly in the SEC.

This is true. It's a hybrid. There's another thread with links to a great write up.

It's all coach speak and pom poms until they hit the field. I reserve getting excited about anything having to do with Vols football until I see it on the field working.

We will need the best player in college football or move to the pac12. The spread can be effective but its not a magic pill. 10 years ago it could equalize talent but defenses in the sec are catching up.

Meyer did well while he had one of greatest college football player of our time and until Saban adapted.

It's all going to hinge on recruiting the best dual threat QB we can find...

As long as we go back to the 4-3 on defense

So Butch, unlike Dooley, will actually implement a defense this year? Any word on if Jones will use "tackling" in his defensive sceme? Also, why do all our players on defense run like elderly white people:question:

I'm more worried about our o-line. It was one of the best under a more conventional scheme. I still have nightmares about what happened in 08.

For what it's worth I played in a spread offense as running back in high school and I loved it.it seemed easier to read the holes and make bigger plays than the pro style but that's just my opinion
