The Rocky Top Spread

To those bashing the "spread" system... Chaney openly stated that his offense had a lot of spread packages. Just because an offense has spread principles doesn't mean you go 5-Wide every play. You can run the spread from under center as well. Just don't understand why everyone thinks we're going to look like West Virginia or the Tebow era Florida.

I don't pretend to be a football expert, just a fan...but isn't there a difference between a "spread offense" and a "spread option offense"?

Some of these teams being mentioned like Oregon, and Urban's Florida teams, and Malzahn's teams are spread option teams, right?

It just seems like some people aren't making the distinction...

UT was primarily a spread offense team this past year. Under CBJ, there will most like be read options added, so we will have elements of spread option. The offense will likely resemble Oregon/Meyer/Rich Rod offenses.

Not freaking out but I get alittle nervous when we change wholesale schemes. Really makes me nervous when we change something that was working.

As far as our defense goes...we could change to a stallingrad 4-3 cover 2 mustang hybrid and it wouldnt bother me at all.

Agree with the bold, but that happened when CBJ didn't retain Chaney. I have no idea what is in store for UT football and I don't think anyone will have a clue until at least the orange and white game.

Will there really be that much different than Chaneys offense? Is 5 wide and an offset pistol not considered spread?

Doesn't matter. Spread, pro style, slow, up tempo, we'll score points no matter what. The team is only as good as the defense.

There are already multi threads that actually talk about the nuances of Jones' system and deal with the term "spread offense." One even included links to video footage and diagrams. Either the majority of people are too lazy to read anything more than two a sentence post, or are too stupid to understand.

Urban Meyer ran a spread option. Malzahn also runs a run heavy spread option system. Jones will be running a pro spread, which simply means you won't see I-formation. You'll likely see no less than three WRs on every play, or athletic TEs in the slot. This is designed to "spread" the defense out, and allow for effective zone blocking run plays out of the shotgun. Something UT was already doing a lot of under Chaney.
The idea is running a lot of plays out of the same formation. Makes defenses commit their look pre-snap.

Good post.

Could've left out the stupid and lazy part tho.

What kind of blocking scheme will they use?

For what it's worth I played in a spread offense as running back in high school and I loved it.it seemed easier to read the holes and make bigger plays than the pro style but that's just my opinion

This will be a pro style offense. Just really up tempo, with no huddle.

Thanks you for explaining this. I think too many focus on the term "spread" and assume 5 WR sets. I think Butch's offense would be better described as no-huddle, hurry-up, up-tempo, etc. Very familliar to what we saw this past season with Chaney. Zone blocking is all about the offensive linemen stepping in unison to an area or zone and blocking the defenders in that zone as opposed to lining up man to man and matching up with whomever is in front of them pre-snap. The O-line will need to work on cohesion and synchronization in order for this to work effectively.

Okay, read this. Zone read is the word, everybody is doing it, like bellbottoms in the 70's. It is not like UT will be running something that is not very common. The players are all very familiar with it, the new language will be harder to learn than the scheme.

The line between receiver and back is very blurry today. Versatile is were its at.

Neal is decent in the slot. Pig might be able to play some RB. I don't see the rest moving around too much....Im not really that worried about it.....i think it'll be almost like this year only more fast paced and more screens

Lol! Dig it! What is a Stalingrad D? I want 1! Worked for Zhukov and Kruschev! Dang sure an improvement over Dools` Rommel D-Day D!!! Deer in headlights Germans with Rommel nowhere to be found to give orders. Pretty accurate anology for Dool`s D. I hope we get a Soviet D. Defense in depth with powerful reserves. The Germans relied on thinly held lines and superior sturmtroopers to counterattack to restore the line(Bray,J.h.,And CP.) Yeah, hope we get a Stalingrad D,and a Bagration O(may be a bit too obscure a ww2 ref, google it). I am not opposed to the word spread. I`m not opposed to changing offenses. Ours was good at getting us back within 10 after we fell behind 28! OUR O LOOKED BETTER THAN IT WAS CUZ OPPONENTS` Ds "let off the gas". All besides Saban&Vandy. We sure as H*** WON`T BEAT BAMA WITH Dools offense! Go Vols!
