So then what's your explanation from those two games to these last for games in terms of perimeter defense?

Lack of focus or intensity. They're giving a half arsed effort on the defensive end right now.

Many factors for that, including the fact that it's holiday break for the university and the fact that they're obviously a lot more focused in the bigger games. I expect this team to perform at a much higher level in terms of focus and intensity when league play rolls around.

You're looking way too deep into a 2 week stretch of poor play in December. It happens.

Oh you mean our defense has been stellar in every single game other than these past 4? Nova? Good effort on D. Pitt? Good effort on D. Missouri State? Eh. The first matchup with Belmont? Well, again they shot in the 20s on 3pt %. I don't remember if that's because they were off like they were tonight or if we actually looked like we gave a damn on D..

Prior to these 4 games, the defense has looked outstanding at times and has also looked average-suspect at other times. Point is, I wouldn't call our defense downright awful. They have proven they can play with the best of them when they come into the game with focus and intensity, like I expect them to do after the break. It's also why I wouldn't say Kemba is going to go crazy on us.

We'll see. I hope you're right but I'm not counting on it like you are.

You don't go into Pitt and win, this team did. I refuse to believe that this team "isn't that good" as some have said. Granted Tennessee has been playing awful as of late, but it's December. We'll be fine IMO.

Technically it wasn't @ Pitt.

1. It's a win. After three straight losses, style points aren't very important.
2. Tennessee is incredibly fortunate Belmont missed roughly 100 open threes. I wouldn't want to see that game replayed tomorrow.
3. If you like awful offensive basketball, the first half was nirvana. Both teams looked as if they had lead in their shoes.
4. No excuse for being killed on the boards as Tennessee was. The big men should be embarrassed.
5. Scotty Hopson and Tobias Harris did demand the ball and attack the basket. That constitutes progress at this point.
6. Jordan McRae earned a longer look. His energy was a huge lift.
7. Until effort dictates playing time, this team is going to struggle. Guys sleepwalking and still getting minutes is intolerable.
8. Nothing says great officiating like butchering a call, then giving a coach a technical when he gets angry about it. That's high school garbage.

9. Huge strategic mistake by Belmont at the end. The defender assigned to either Melvin Goins or Trae Golden should have run at Hopson as soon as he caught the ball.
10. This team still has serious work to do. Merry Christmas, Volnation.
agree
agree
disagree. he went beyond angry. he was on the court and looked like he was going to claw the refs eyes out. no telling what he actually said. don't know about the foul, but the tech was justified.

Does anyone know what happened to Tatum that he couldn't come back in the game?

Randy Smith had a heck of a time figuring out who it was injured on that play as well... even after several replays.

Hat, just wanted to let you know I enjoy reading your analysis of the games. You always seem to make sense. It's the first thing I look for on this forum after a Vol bkb game.

I don't understand our sense of extreeeeeeeme urgency at the worst times. We refuse to work on our half-court offense. It seems like the only time the players are willing to try it is at the end of either half. Too many garbage possessions. I don't think they understand that relying on junk-ball doesn't do us any favors. I don't give a damn if an off-balance shot goes in---it shouldn't be a shot we try right now with 25+ on the clock. We need to get better.
