i dont understand everyone thinking UCONN is gonna shred us (particularly on pg 2).. if you havent notice, we usually dont have trouble getting up for the big games against the top teams.

1. It's a win. After three straight losses, style points aren't very important.
2. Tennessee is incredibly fortunate Belmont missed roughly 100 open threes. I wouldn't want to see that game replayed tomorrow.
3. If you like awful offensive basketball, the first half was nirvana. Both teams looked as if they had lead in their shoes.
4. No excuse for being killed on the boards as Tennessee was. The big men should be embarrassed.
5. Scotty Hopson and Tobias Harris did demand the ball and attack the basket. That constitutes progress at this point.
6. Jordan McRae earned a longer look. His energy was a huge lift.
7. Until effort dictates playing time, this team is going to struggle. Guys sleepwalking and still getting minutes is intolerable.
8. Nothing says great officiating like butchering a call, then giving a coach a technical when he gets angry about it. That's high school garbage.
9. Huge strategic mistake by Belmont at the end. The defender assigned to either Melvin Goins or Trae Golden should have run at Hopson as soon as he caught the ball.
10. This team still has serious work to do. Merry Christmas, Volnation.

2. I think they shot the contested threes better than the open ones. Maybe we should've left them out there more often.
1, 3, 4, 7, 10. Absolutely.
5. Finally
6. McRae brought some good energy, but he needs some serious work on his shot selection. It's obvious why he hasn't been playing, even if he showed potential.

But the problem is, the other options at backup 3 are just not acceptable, and have no room to improve. With Pearl and Woolridge, you have what you have, and it's not good enough. McRae may also be not good enough, but with some game experience he might be better in a few weeks.

It's at least worth a try.

about all I can add to Hat's excellent analysis:

1. We shoot free throws like we did vs. USC, we win this game going away. Everyone not named Hopson or Harris was 6-19 from the line tonight. Ridiculous.
2. 9 shots for Tobias is not enough. 12-15, minimum. More of the offense has to go through him, as in designed plays, which I think would create more opportunities for Hopson to do what he does well, which is slash, not shoot jumpers.

IF we are going to play the "if" game, If Belmont hits their wide open threes then they win going away.

Right now Bruce is just playing numerous combinations to find out who are going to be his players when conference play begins. Until then it is going to look like a clusterf#$k.There is absolutely no rhythm to our offense. We will need to run an offense that creates better looks for our role players. Harris and Hopson are the only ones that can create their shots.:bash:

When Randy Byrd retires as a head coach, whoever is at UT needs to bring him on as a consultant, assistant, whatever to teach that half-court offense. Poetry in motion. We can only be thankful they were very off last night.

Not to mention Belmont driving the open lane with easy unchallenged layups and Tennessee challenged everytime. That's coaching isn't it or perhaps as you mentioned basically laziness.

I have been impressed with Byrd. Why hasn't he left for somewhere else?

I get the impression from a couple of interviews I've done with him that he's really attuned to Belmont's mission as a university and doesn't have much interest in dealing with the peripheral junk that comes with moving up the ladder.

I attend most Belmont home games. I have a relative on the coaching staff at BU, and they fully expected to win the game. Belmont consistently year in and year out finishes top 10 in 3 point field goal percentage. Very uncharacteristic shooting night. Maybe it's because the team was still at Cracker Barrel in Cookeville three hours before tipoff...To get to the point, the insight by one of the Belmont's assistants was grim for the Vols. His assessment: "They're horrible. Terrible." UT is incapable of playing 25 seconds of solid D, Brian Williams is a lazy slob, and Scotty Hopson can't be relied on to lead a team to any significant destination down the road. Belmont should have won and probably will in the future if this matchup continues. GBO.

Would you mind relaying a simple message to your relative?

"Scoreboard, b****."

Don't get me wrong, I was pulling for the Vols but I was still very conflicted. He has a valid point that our offense is a travesty though. Classy post by the way.
