Minus the technicals I would agree that the refs were solid. I didn't see what Fields did to earn his, but the other two were given out a little prematurely in my opinion.

As far as the game goes, solid performance by the Vols tonight. We dominated the boards, especially if you take away the few minutes of Memphis' run to end the first half and start the second, and shot selection was solid. A lot of guys creating for each other tonight.

I liked the rotation of guys on the floor tonight, but I'd like to see a little more overlap in the substitutions rather than having basically 2 5-man lines. Particularly when it comes to guys that provide a consistent scoring threat.

Here's to hoping we can keep it up as we start SEC play and take care of the Gators.

I thought the dance team was pretty good this time. The cheerleaders? Meh.

How did T Harris get his technical?

Hat, I thought you liked Pastner and thought he was a good fit there. If so, do you still feel that way? As a Vol, I too will be humored to see them turn on him. I imagine that was the reason behind your statement.

There really aren't conference crews like there are in football. The basketball guys work games in mutiple leagues. All three of those guys will do some SEC games. I did think they were solid.

Sirmons isn't one of my favorites, but they were fine tonight.

He's got incredible recruiting connections. That never hurts. However, I had as much control over his team as he did tonight.

Granted, I only saw it once in real time, I didn't see anyone under him and it also looked like he intentionally threw himself into Cam while hanging.

He didn't just hang, he kicked his knees up and did a pull-up thingie. It looked taunt-ish.

But...eh, I prolly wouldn't have teed him either. Unless I was trying to set a record for technicals in one game, which they might have been doing.

The first technical was Dooley-esque. Too many men on the court REALLY??? How can we not say hey there is 5 out there sit your butt down? That being said Vols thumped Tiger High so it is a heck of alot easier to live with mistakes after a W over a rival.

And it is not something that can be fixed with a practice or two, nor a different lineup. When you have a team of me first attitudes and people who want highlights instead of playing as a team you lose, especially when the other team is hitting shots. Just ask Tennessee when we played Oakland or CofC.

This team really is too young, inexperienced and made up of too many 4 and 5 start pre-madonnas especially to have a young energetic coach who hasn't been through enough experience himself.

Judging by the end, I see them as needing a Starting 5 of Barton, Barton, Jackson, Crawford and that white guy who was freaking drilling 3s at the end, DAMN... remember we had Dane playing PF that one year, it just needs to be more run and gun but less selfish work

Being from the Memphis area and having seen (Drew Barham) play while going to some games, he isn't near as good as those 3's made him look. He's extremely inconsistent and was bricking every shot whenever I have seen him play. Must have caught a lucky streak with the pressure being off of him to perform.

In real time, it looked like he nailed Fields in the neck with one of those knees. I'd definitely t him up for that.

1. Great night at the old barn. Wish more people had shown up for it.
2. The final score didn't do the beating justice. That was a 35 point game.
3. Here's hoping it's a trend and not an aberration. We'll find out in the next 3 games.
4. Hopson and Harris both played like the best players on the floor should. They ate their guys alive.
6. Memphis is a selfish mess of a team. The improved C-USA is going to kick their asses.
7. I have to admit, I was wrong about Maymon's atitude. The guy doesn't have great skill, but he plays incredibly hard.
10. Good sendoff present for Pearl. Here's hoping the same effort is put forth for Tony Jones' debut.

Completely with you on all of these things. TBA actually got pretty rockin' for only 10,000 people (announced 18,800? ha!).

It was nice to see the total rebounding domination to build the lead early on. At one point, it was 19-5 on the glass. And then when they cut the lead to 10, we kept hitting the boards hard and making some baskets.

Also, Pearl made a good call cutting his son out of the lineup. Baby Pearl gave us some good minutes at 4, but he's not as good as Maymon, and he was lost at 3.

I would like to ask what the hell is wrong with our ability to take the last shot of a half. I mentioned to my Dad with 30 seconds left in the first that we were bound to not only miss the shot but allow a fast break bucket on the other end. It seems like this happens every time. We can't get a good shot, and we don't even pretend to get back and defend. It's only 60 seconds of every game, but it's 60 seconds that needs fixing.

Also, four technicals in one game? I got the reason for the first one, but what were the latter two all about?

And, although the Schadenfreude can be grand, I really hope Memphis tears through CUSA. I want that to be a good win on the tournament resume. We have some nasty losses to balance out.

8. The dance team doing performance art to the music of Melissa Etheridge. That's halftime magic.
9. I can't wait to see how long it takes the Memphis fans to turn on Josh Pastner. By mid February, they'll be caling for blood.
10. Good sendoff present for Pearl. Here's hoping the same effort is put forth for Tony Jones' debut.

Another Fluke game Hat?

Judging by their message boards, they already have. Most of them had unrealistic expectations for this year to begin with.

Calkins kicks it off with this gem:

"The Tigers are so bad that the Grizzlies are thinking about drafting them with the 2nd pick."

Geoff Calkins: Vols show Memphis Tigers how far they have to go Memphis Commercial Appeal Mobile

And in agreeing with Hat, he suggests that the hold on this team is tenuous, at best.

Not so fast, my friend. When that boy gets old enough to shave he's gonna be a darn good coach. :whistling:

Hat, you are nuts if you think informed Memphis fans didn't know this was coming. Hardcore Memphis fans are just like hardcore UT fans -- they know what color toothbrush their players use. For those of us Memphis BB fans that actually follow the team and have seen the games, we knew this was coming. It was no surprise at all - we were completely handled by Kansas and G-town. LSU and Miami are middle of the pack conference teams at best and will not be enough to get Memphis in the tourney. We escaped Austin Peay.

There is no team in this team. No chemistry. When your coach has to keep a chart of how many high-five's you give your teammates, you know there's a problem with chemistry. Memphis should have kept Jelan Kendrick and let him play -- he couldn't have caused the chemistry to be any worse than it is right now.

As for Pastner, he's not going anywhere any time soon. Although, he was definitely in over his head last night and that was obvious. It's frustrating to be a Memphis BB fan and UT football fan right now -- both have inexperienced coaches that are maturing/growing up along with their teams. If that's the kind of coach you want (young, energetic, great recruiter, etc.), then bumps in the road are to be expected.

Good in-state rivalry win for UT. Nice for this team to have a bright spot before the 8 games. Should help with recruiting. Will not help UT much with the Selection Committee as I think Memphis will be NIT bound at best.

Couple of thoughts-

Glad to see we've spent time working against a zone defense. That may be the best zone o I've seen by a ut team since Ron slay tore apart Syracuse early 01-02.

Not a fan of state pressing late in the game. Not sure at that point it can do any good to help your team and it looks petty and cheap.

.

Fields didn't get a technical, Coleman from Memphis did when he punched Fields in the ribs on the way back to play defense after Coleman scored. He did it right in front of the refs. I'm not sure why he wasn't ejected for it.
