The Section 103 Postgame Report

That he actually do his job. I'm pretty sure he's paid to coach. This team shows scant evidence of that having been done.

excellent suggestion.

and how do you propose achieving that, seeing as you're in the influential position of UT bball enthusiast and season ticket holder?

If you've got the ability to effect change, I'm all for it.

Why? If he's the kind of milquetoast fan who thinks accomplishments in line with the Mississippi States of the world are sufficient to venerate a coach, I could care less what his thoughts on the program are.

I don't live in Kville or, frankly, anywhere close to it. I don't have season tickets. I didn't go to UT. I did grow up attending every bball game for the better part of 12 years of my formative years. And now, the best I can do is get ESPN's gameplan and watch as many games as I can and perhaps attend a couple of games each year.

Therefore, it's disingenuous to call myself anything more than a casual fan. If that's milquetoast in your mind, so be it. I do care if they win or lose and how they play the game, but my life doesn't depend on it, nor should it.

I do enjoy the mental sparring on this board, which I presume you do too or else you'd find something more valuable to do. Even if I'm a mere casual fan.

Cheers.

I don't have to do anything. He'll either do his job or perish. That's how it works. The difference between me and Pearl slurpers like you is that I have no investment in the guy. I don't particularly like him and am certain he's one of the two or three most overrated coaches in the country. If he succeeds, fine. If he fails, he won't be difficult to replace and I won't miss him one bit.

Fine. I just don't see the reason for becoming indignant at the prospect of having to endure a conversation with a "casual fan". Nobody said this was going to be a Mensa meeting.

Never thought otherwise. I wasn't indignant. Simply pointing out that it's a waste of time for someone who expects excellence to discuss the direction of a program with someone who doesn't much care.

If you gathered up all the UTbball fans who care as much as you do, it would be a very small gathering.

the amount of emotional energy you spend on bruce pearl and his future seems to greatly outweigh the amount I do. we just come at it from different angles.

I'm glad he became our coach and can appreciate what he's done for a program accustomed to failure during my lifetime.

if he doesn't succeed, I won't lose a minute of sleep.

I hope you enjoyed riding the bandwagon when they were winning. Why would the real fans have any use for the fair weather type such as yourself?

I like this response, most haven't cared in the past, and don't care now, so I am going to be a sheep and follow along.

I bet you fit right in with the UT is a football school and who are we ever going to get to coach the basketball team that could possibly be better than Bruce Pearl. I mean, Jerry Green didn't go to 4 NCAA tournaments in a row... oh wait.

PPPPartsp3PPPsarts3pp: Nice to meet you.

I suppose I was a fair-weather fan when I was standing on the fold-out chairs at Stokely as a 6-year-old watching Tyrone Beaman, Willie Burton, Dan Federman, Dale Ellis and Michael Brooks. I suppose I was a fair-weather fan when my most prized possession were posters signed by Fred Jenkins and Rob Jones. I suppose I was a fair weather fan when I watched every single painful game coached by and played by guys with Houston as their last name. I suppose I was a fair weather fan as I watched Kevin O'Neill fight with Doug Dickey and as a result put out a team of guys who could hustle but couldn't make a bucket. I suppose I was a fair weather fan as I flew from Austin to Kville multiple times to watch Buzz Peterson's team lose..badly. I suppose I was a fair weather fan as I drove out of Tobacco Road, and 6 hours down I-40 to watch this new guy coach them against Texas, Kentucky, Ohio State, South Carolina, and Alabama, and when I drove to Greensboro to watch them lose in the second round, and to Charlotte to watch them get creamed by Louisville in the Sweet 16.

And I guess that now that I'm not losing sleep over this rough patch, it pretty much falls in line with my lackadaisical fanhood.

Maybe I am a fair weather fan. Or maybe it goes something like this: some people grow up in a town and stay in that town - FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

Others move away and live in different cities. And while I'd love to warp myself to Kville to watch every game, life kinda gets in the way.

Oh, and P.S. - check the # of times I've posted on any football thread, and you'll quickly realize I care way, way more about bball than football. And for the record, I was glad when we fired DeVoe, Houston, O'Neill, and Peterson. And I wanted Fulmer gone 6 years ago. I couldn't be happier that we have a new coach.

Looks like you are a lot more than a "casual" fan. I am surprised that you seem to be completely content with how UT is playing this year, and really Pearl's systems, both offense and defense in the half court since he has been here. I am personally not upset about losing, but I am not happy about what many see as the major cause of it. Which is all pointing to the head coach. No one is saying that he needs to be fired right now, as that is ludicrous. But he will have to get better in a few years, or he will fall by the wayside like others before him.

I was not happy that O'Neil left, and looking back, I would have liked to see how the players that he recruited would have done with him as the coach, instead of Green. I know they would have played better defense.

I have been attending UT basketball and football games all of my 30 years, so I do remember some of the games in Stokely, but not too many. I remember good years and bad years, but I don't buy your arguments that we are not Kentucky, or UNC, or whatever. Good many is paid for the coach to make the players perform up to their abilities, and this is what needs to happen. Under achieving should not be acceptable at any program, regardless of thier previous history. UT has all the resources to be excellent.

I apologize for calling you a fair weather fan, as you posted a pretty extensive history of following Bball through the good and bad years. But, your posting in this thread does not seem to jive with your following of the program. It seems as though you treat it as pure entertainment, and as someone who is not invested in the University as a graduate, donor, or season ticket holder, then it makes more sense to me now.

I think the point that Hat is trying to make is this: this year's team, thus far, has a won-loss record that is not commensurate with its talent level. Ultimately, the responsibility for that has to come back on the coach, just as it did for Fulmer. You are, as they say, what your record says you are.

Thus ruining what should have been the ultimate golden era of Tennessee Basketball.

There has been a rumor that O'Neil left, because of his wife. He had a problem staying faithful. She gave him an ultimatum to pack up or lose her. Is this bad propaganda to mask the real reason Kevin left?
