I really thought we would get back to pressing and forcing teams to play at our tempo and in a way Pearl is comfortable with. Don't get me wrong I like CBP, but I think he has a very narrow strategic window in which to work effectively. He presses, he gets cheap points, his guys enjoy the frenetic pace and the energy, and it flusters the opponent. It just suits his personality. Maybe at some point in his history he won without playing that way, but he just doesn't strike me as a walk it up, run a set, and play lockdown defense kind of coach.
Not bashing CBP in any way, just kind of disappointed we don't seem to have the players to play the way he clearly wants and needs to play. Plus I just enjoy the press.
I think Pearl is a great coach, but the thing that really separates him from other coaches is a simple plan to run and create "the frenetic pace" you mentioned. This wears down teams with fewer players in the rotation or teams that rely primarily on two or three main players. We foul a lot, but so does the other team. By the end of the game, everyone is in foul trouble, and the other team is worn out. We can substitute, but the other team cannot afford to. Without this strategy, we lose that competitive edge. Thus, a twenty win season is still pretty good, given our talent level, but not what we are hoping for or expecting. This is why we have to have the full-court press, and this is why it must be affective.
The floor would be a repeat of last season. The ceiling is that the point guards are much better than expected and the team develops a better defensive metality. The best case scenario for the regular season has them finishing with 3 or 4 losses and getting a top 8 seed in the tournament. That puts them in a position to make a regional final, but I'll have to see a team with a Bobby Maze/Melvin Goins combo make the Elite Eight to believe it.Hat, I always enjoy these reports. Can you give us a floor/ceiling type assessment of this team? It seems like they are improved somewhat, but what does that mean for their record/postseason performance for this season?
I dunno if it is just me, but Tyler Smith, although a great player, is not showing 1st round NBA draft status.
If Tyler Smith had been remotely great last season, he wouldn't still be playing for free.If my memory serves me correctly, Tyler didnt assert himself much in last year's exhibition games, and ended up having a great year. I think he knows that some of the other guys need to get a little confidence going and that he really doesnt have to take a game over when we are playing a non D1 school.
That would certainly fill a glaring need.

If Pinkston and Harris join McRae and Golden, that would be a pretty nasty recruiting class. However, I'm not going to hold my breath.
If only UT could land an elite true PG. That would be the final piece to the puzzle. Dream big, right?
