The shut down thread

This is an a precedent dude, he has the ****ing authority to declare a national emergency we’re still under national emergencies declared by other ****ing presidents

I can't figure out why he doesn't just go with national security and use the Patriot Act. If you're going to intercept communications, why not go for the physical? Simply classify drug lords and their toadies as terrorists - their drug epidemic (it's not victimless) is every bit as lethal as a bomb. If you're dead, you're dead regardless of how you got that way.

So not an emergency until two plus years into his term?

You understand the president is basically the chief administrator ... responsible for running the agencies that supposedly do things ... like protect us from harm (I'm not sure what in the hell some of the three letter rogue agencies think they are doing, but that's another issue). If he in that position determines that funds are needed to protect the southern border and congress fails to act accordingly with funding, then the problem is on them. I'd say he's been patient enough in allowing congress a couple of years to act like adults; they didn't, so time to take the gloves off.

Called it!!

Trump should set up a bill signing cermony in the Oval Office.

Then right before he signs the bill “oh what’s this? Well well it’s an EO to move Federal funds from other areas that I have discretion over in the amount of $4.4B to fund the remainder of the wall! I’ll sign this first!”

Sign the EO.

Sign the bill.

Use the &1.7B to start construction during the court fight for the remaining $4.4B.

Dim brains would be like...

It’s the only ****ing way he’s going to get the funds to build the damn wall, The ends justify the means
no they don't.

unless I have missed it, it hasn't happened yet. But if/when it does it will be the first thing Trump has done to raise a serious question with me.

That remains to be seen. The case most often being cited right now as relevant to this action involved President Truman's attempt to seize a privately owned steel mill (Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer 1952). Basically, Congress is the branch of government with the exclusive power to tax and spend, the courts should overturn any unilateral executive branch action, as they did in Youngstown.
What does keeping citizens safe have to do with a past president taking a privately owned steel mill?

Now he should use an overreaching piece of legislation to overreach because of a war the US started and can't figure how to back out of without looking stupid? That's your suggestion?

So what’s your solution ? The Dems will never authorize funding for any type of physical barrier so are we jto sit by and allow an influx of illegals to walk across our border untouched? I’m sorry you feel that way but Despite the BS negative reporting on resistance to the wall his base will stand strong and support him on this issue.Illegal immigration is a serious problem and some sort of barrier needs to be in place. The wall will be built..

This part in bold describes the only reason that Trump has gotten any legislation at all passed or any nominees confirmed... let's see how he does with the next two years.
I expect him to do precisely nothing. Very similar to Obama once Dems lost control of Congress in 2010.

I think a likely scenario is that Trump wins in 2020 but loses the Senate, which means even more gridlock, which isn't a bad thing. Again, just like Obama's 2 terms.

A lot can happen in two years. I think the Senate stays GOP controlled, but I'd bet the House comes back to nearly even. Maybe stays blue, but it'll be a narrow margin.

there was funding before Trump made it an issue. Obama added more wall than any other President. The "end" was there and being achieved before Trump. I think this is a case of his ego being too big to let it happen. as has been pointed out, he theoretically had all the support he needed his first two years. If he had wanted it done, he could have.

Now he is using the political divide to increase his power. not a fan.

I don't care if he is protecting the physical US if he is crapping on what made us great, the Constitution.

There is no way he wins in 2020.
