The shut down thread

If he declares a national emergency it will be bogged down in the courts and will never happen. This will all be for nothing and people will have been hurt for no reason.

I’d like to see a border security/DACA deal done. Throw in more money if you have to. At least something fairly impactful will have come of this.

Whatever advances the narrative. Politicians aren't much different than wrestlers firing up a crowd during a promo. They are experts at telling their audience what they want to hear.
Trump panders harder to his base than any politician I've ever seen. He is afraid of his base. He knows that he can't afford to lose more than 1% of it and still win re-election in 2020. That's because he has never done anything to broaden his support.

If he declares a national emergency, he is worse than Obama.

Your second statement is what both sides should strive for.

That is where the negotiations should have started. However, there is nothing to suggest that Trump has offered the Democrats anything to get them to budge. He could have more than $5.7 billion for his stupid wall, if he put DACA protection on the table. He still hasn't.

This is the obvious play. Dims should be saying “fine you want the wall? Here are the DACA terms” it’s obvious. But instead they just say “no no no!” as they know it’s another notch in his belt and he’ll go on a two year victory lap.
Yea the great negotiator should have handled this during the last CR. It still falls at his feet. Terrible calculation by him. Trump supporters faulting the Dems right now are simply forgetting the not distant past. He chose politics over policy. And as he said he owns this shutdown.

I don't think he necessarily panders harder to a base than Presidents before him. Obama and Bush did it to great effect, and he certainly doesn't pander as much as House or Senate members, who are beholden only to a state or a district. Obama or Dubya did nothing to broaden their support either - they each won the election and then re-election with an electorate they were able to cobble together, then stuck with it.

What is a politician if they aren't a panderer?

This is wrong.

They have already done that!

If you see everything, or nearly everything, that Trump does as being beyond the pale or unprecedented I think you lack some historical perspective or watch CNN too much.

Trump is different from politicians before him mostly in style and communication. He never has talked like a typical politician and still doesn't.

On the front lines of our national crisis.

Because they cross the border and stop right there.

I think most people agree that there are places where a barrier makes sense and places where it is completely ludicrous. Trump was foolish to propose a complete and continuous wall. Not to mention the divisive and insulting way in which he went about it.

I see Trump still lives daily rent free inside your pea brain. Build that wall Mr. President.

This border nonsense is a national emergency but humans contributing climate change is a hoax? This President is seriously confused or just plain stupid.

You'll have to talk with China & India about that pollution problem....America has done it's part to clean up.

Like we’ve talked before (I think it was you) yes he should have dug in earlier. That was an unforced error.

They have already done that!
Do not start this again. It never made it to his desk. Dims wouldn’t go for the lower immigration levels and Freedom Caucus wouldn’t go for the easy DACA path proposed. If it cleared the House it would have died im the Senate. And while Trump didn’t like the compromise they at least publically supported it.

Show me a stationary camera and I’ll show you some deer rifle target practice. Stationary cameras would probably be the easiest thing to defeat without any other layers.

And a good deal of us are saying walks don’t replace agents. Why does that keep getting ignored. I’ve not seen anybody advocating lowering the agent count.
the current number of agents is apparently insufficient. this adds walls, which are going to be patrolled just as often as the border is now. so we are still at the same problem. not enough people manning the walls/border. making the new walls even less beneficent than they otherwise would be.

they traveled thousands of miles, adding a few vertical feet of travel distance isn't going to do anything.

sure add more border agents, thats not the argument being made.
