The shut down thread

If this was true the wall would already be built.

What are you talking about?

If he "declares" a national emergency in order to circumvent the separation of powers and their checks and balances - will you then agree that he believes he is a king or will you internally rationalize the justification for doing an end run around the people's wishes?

CNN’s Acosta Confirms Walled Part of the Border is Crisis-Free

CNN reporter Jim Acosta confirmed no crisis existed along a walled portion of the U.S.-Mexico border during a visit Thursday.

In a video shared to Twitter, Acosta pointed to "some of the steel slats that the president's been talking about." Walking along the border in McAllen, Texas, Acosta noted that the president has warned of a national emergency at the unwalled portion of the southern border. Acosta observed that this emergency did not exist along the portion of the border that had already been secured with steel slats.

"As we're walking along here we're not saying any kind of imminent danger," he remarked, patting the border barrier with his hand as he filmed himself. "There are no migrants trying to rush towards this fence."

anything that makes you all more unhinged I'm all for it

That's fine. Is anyone arguing anything different than this?

No one is saying Americans must learn Spanish to make immigrants feel at home.
Yes - I think they in fact are. I don't think anybody, or at least I haven't heard anybody, say that Americans should learn Spanish or any other language to accommodate immigrants. However, I do think there is an interesting standard applied to Americans that isn't applied to the French, the Germans, or basically any other nationality.

Nobody calls the French racist for their desire that when people go over there, they speak or at least try to speak French. It's generally understood that it's their country, language, and culture and as the outsider you need to at least try and fit in a little bit. When a Mexican comes to the United States, especially if they have immigrated here, and they don't speak English, and an American says something like "they need to speak English," oftentimes that person is called a racist, prejudiced, or not understanding enough. Nobody says that about the French when they want people to speak French in France.

I wonder how big the freak out would be if Obama shut down the government because his sacred cow didn't get support in the legislative branch.

You guys can whine till you're blue in the face but the elected representatives were sent to DC to do the American electorates bidding. Security theater ain't in the budget and the Senate GOP agreed.

Congress controls the purse strings; maybe someone should tell Trump this isn't Burger King and he can't have it his way just because he stomps around.

Like he did in 2013?

I don't recall much of an outcry from conservatives.

Who predicts Trump will attempt to end run Congress and declare a national emergency?

Place your bets now.

It's his only way out, he's planted his flag and backing down now would only serve to make him look like a punk bit<h to the red hats. He'd rather blow up our democracy than look bad.

CNN Legal Analyst: Courts ‘Unlikely’ to Stop Trump if He Declares National Emergency at Border

Jeffrey Toobin, CNN's chief legal analyst, said on Thursday he thinks it is "unlikely" the courts would stop President Donald Trump if he declared a national emergency and shifted money toward the construction of a wall on the southern border.

John Berman, co-host of CNN's New Day, asked Toobin if it would be legal for the president to declare a national emergency to put money toward a wall.

"I think it probably is," Toobin responded. "I think it is unlikely to be stopped by the courts, let's put it that way."
Toobin cited the president's broad emergency powers and the challenge of finding a plaintiff with standing to sue as reasons why a legal challenge to an emergency declaration would likely fail.

"Ultimately, [it is unlikely to be stopped] for a couple of reasons. One is that the president's emergency powers are phrased in a very broad way. And second, as a purely legal matter, it is hard for me to imagine the courts finding a plaintiff with standing, that is, the plaintiff with the legal right to sue to stop this at any early point in the process," he said.

He will declare a national emergency, reopen the government, claim victory while everything is litigated.

He is that desperate for a win. He was trying to get a win with the troop withdraw from Syria but that didn't go over as he imagined.

And the thug democrats can't accept a wall which they have previously supported because the loony open border base would be pissed at them

And the dems are that desperate to keep the wall from being built after years and years of saying we need one.

The dems know if he gets this wall put up they have absolutely no shot of beating him in 2020. It's why they're fighting against it.

they literally just walked across a country, a 30 foot fence at the end isn't going to deter them. just look at what happened with the last caravan. even with guards there people were attempting to climb over.

What percentage attempted to climb over?

Would a fence slow them down long enough for border patrol agents to respond?

Six GOP Senators Offer to Trade Amnesties for Border Wall plus Cheap Labor

Six GOP Senators briefed Jared Kushner and President Donald Trump’s top congressional aide about a plan to swap two amnesties in exchange for border-wall funding.

The briefing shows the GOP leaders’ “contempt for Trump’s immigration-reform campaign promise,” said Rosemary Jenks, policy director at NumbersUSA. “There is no talk in this about asylum reform, TVPRA, detention spaces or sanctuary cities, or any of the enforcement needs — it is about amnesty and cheap labor, and that is exactly what Candidate Tump campaigned against.”

The proposed amnesties-for-wall swap appeared Wednesday as Trump pressured Democrats to reciprocate his compromises on the day after his successful prime-time address to the nation. On Thursday, Trump will visit the border to call for wall funding.

The Senators’ draft offer to the Democrats, however, also includes incentives sought by GOP-aligned business groups, such as an expansion of the H-2B blue collar visa-worker program.

Few Democrats support the H-2B visa program but its inclusion could encourage GOP legislators to ignore protests from the GOP’s pro-American base. Several GOP Senators in the group also support a DACA amnesty because it would add more imported workers and consumers to their local markets.

It doesn't "hurt me" I just don't see why one would leave such a crappy place but yet want to keep everything about that place in a different country. If I move to Germany I can't expect everyone to cater to me and speak English

Who said they expect us to speak Spanish? Have you seen the world? Americans are everywhere and they often don't learn the language. It's just the way immigration works for some.

When a Mexican comes to the United States, especially if they have immigrated here, and they don't speak English, and an American says something like "they need to speak English," oftentimes that person is called a racist, prejudiced, or not understanding enough.

Because it's sometimes included in highly-publicized rants where the speaker suggests Spanish speakers shouldn't even be in this country. And/or that people speaking Spanish are probably illegal aliens.

There is a frustration among some immigrants that more people don't speak their language in the United States.

As a general precept, as a visitor or resident alien in another country, I wouldn't expect other people to speak my language. It's pretty simple.
