The "Somebody get Z out of Ohio in the snowstorm" WSU Postgame Report

We had all that momentum then Cotton got that "block" against Maymon and it killed every bit of momentum we had.

The one where the guy hit it after it hit the backboard, then steam rolled Maymon? That was only third on the list of referee buffoonery today behind the technical called on McRae for yelling after a dunk (NCAA has achieved its goal in taking the fun out of collegiate sports) and the play where none of them knew who touched the ball last, but just randomly gave it to Wichita after at least 5 seconds of indecision (that should be a jump ball every single time).

that was a clean block against maymon. He went up casually and the guy came from 10 feet away in the time it took maymon to catch and put off the square. It wasn't goaltending, and wasn't a foul.

CCM got out coached again . At this point I don't understand why we don't start our best 5 , and that doesn't include Barton and Richardson . Thompson should be starting and Hubbs as well . Our staring front court were badly out played . Can someone explain to me why Stokes and Maymon insist on going up soft ? They are constantly getting blocked because they won't go up strong and dunk . That shot Maymon got blocked on would not have gotten blocked it he went up strong and dunked . Instead he layed up there like a Lady Vol and got blocked . The refs were terrible too . That T called on McRae was terrible

Yeah I remember him getting upset vs WS in the tourney. Still will never forget Lofton getting us out of that 2 vs 15 upset we almost had.

Haha! At least we made the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney, or should I say at least made the tourney.

Not since his surgery. Barely could dunk before
If he can not play at and above the rim, he needs to sit. He does the team little good if he gives the opposing team an adverting every game. The team is better off with Pops in the game if he can't play the post with guards blocking his shots.

Martin is pathetic. Without Mcrae this team is looking at a losing record. Maymon just don't have it this year. I see that the team takes on its HC personality Martin coaches uninspired and his players play that way. This team could play up tempo and be dangerous but Martin rather play Kevin Oneill ball. There is no excuse for this team or Martin.

Just stop. He was never about the rim and did fine.

Didn't see the game--but it's obvious the Vols need to get more scoring out of Stokes if they want to beat good teams. The problem is, I'm not sure that they can. Both Stokes and Mamon are tweaners--6'8", which is power forward size, and they have power forward bodies, but neither is terribly athletic and neither jumps wells, which is problem when they are playing guys who are taller and have some reach and athleticism. When Stokes has foul problems and has to sit it is even tougher. He's a guy who HAS to have a good game for UT to beat /good competition./

The refs didn't do us any favors but I feel like it all comes down to coaching.

I said last week that the difference in this game would be coaching and it clearly was. Counzo has to be able to make the proper adjustments and he has failed to do so time after time.

I've been waiting to see if CCM will turn the corner and I'll continue to wait. This is his season to do so and although this loss hurts he still has time to right the ship.

There's a lot of ball to be played fellas. I know it sucks but don't give up on this team yet, more specifically the coaching staff because as of now they are all we have.

Good assessment, essentially agree with everything said.

One of my biggest gripes. Everyone that watches UT play knows Stokes and Maymon struggle with length under the basket. How do you not prepare a better gameplan to minimize that effect on 2 of your most important weapons? Stokes looked unmotivated and didn't get great looks all game. Partial credit to the WS defense, but more credit goes to bad coaching on Martin imo.

ESPN2 ends the game and immediately cuts to a smiling Bruce Pearl at the Michigan State game. I miss that man.

go ask for a date!

So you think we can still just play as expected in conference and comfortably get in? I'm worried the SEC isn't going to help our RPI much and we'll have to really overachieve to end up not on the bubble again.

Well have to win SEC tourney my man, if we keep playing like this. We will drop more in confrence games

If you watch the (slowed down) replay, the ball hit the backboard immediately before Cotton got there and Cotton got all hand. Maymon has gotten shortchanged like this 3 times this year because he's short, but if it hits the backboard before you touch it, it's goaltending, regardless of whether it is on it's way up or down.

Just finish and its not a problem. You aren't going to get that call when in real time it looks simultaneous.

1 change I might make as the season goes on is to have Davis replace Maymon because Davis is more aggressive with an outside shot.

I also remember getting upset in the NIT against MTSU and Mercer during the current Martin era.

But it's not the real tournament, and the players don't care. So, it's understandable that the players didn't give a damn.

A view held by a few posters.

Davis should've had Maymon's minutes yesterday when possible.

He did but he got four quick fouls. Once he learns to control himself he might be the best player out of the freshmen bunch. I really like Thompson too. Heady ball player. He has intangibles that we haven't had since Watson.

I'll give Martin credit for recruiting this class. This looks to be the best freshmen class we've had in awhile. Now if Martin could coach them up then that would really help.

Skimming so forgive me but just my 2 cents...

Our bigs no showed, our 2 biggest games this year and Stokes has been in foul trouble. We can't afford that, for us to play to our potential he needs to be in a rhythm and out there 30 minutes. Maymon definitely didn't pick up the slack, and th daunted bruise brothers got out played by a couple nobodies (reminiscent of Stinkbrook from Xavier).

I said before this game, 5-1 was how we needed to finish OOC to feel good, that still remains possible. We lost by 9 to a top 10 team on the road, while not playing a very good game, I don't see that as some horrendous feat.

Win the next 5 (Virginia game is huge), and we are 10-3 heading into SEC play. 20+ wins is still very possible, and I maintain they'll get to around the 22 win mark.
