The Spread

Either Meyer ran a primarily "spread" offense or he didn't. Please pick your argument and stick with it. You say that UM's offense wasn't a spread, so his NCs didn't count as being won by a spread team. Then you pointed out the weakness of spread offenses by showing that Saban beat UM's spread offense handily.

Which is it?

Yes, UM's spread offense won NCs. Yes, Saban beat them handily. Saban beat many teams handily, and very few NCs are won on undefeated seasons.

He ran the spread with Leak. With Tebow it was more single wing than spread.

For the record, I'm not opposed to the spread. But its not going to suddenly make UT good and you going to need superior talent to win every week in the SEC. All these fans getting excited over the spread are going to want Jones run out of town when the growing pains become evident.

Bama's pro-style offense and hard nosed defense proved ,beyond a shadow of a doubt, that almost no one will win every week in the SEC. No matter the philosophy or schemes, talent will generally win with good coaching. When two talented, well coached teams face off, it'll be a good game, no matter the schemes or philosophy.

Anyone who wants the current staff run off immediately when the going gets rough is not a rational fan, and schemes will have little to do with it.

I personally believe that changing philosophy and scheme may be of fairly immediate benefit to UT. It may provide a recruiting boost for the program, since there is a definite chance that we aren't recruiting head-to-head against Bama, UGA and UF on as many recruits. They will all be recruiting prototypical pro-style athletes, while we recruit talented 'spread' guys.

If we have different needs than them, we can look for the cream of the crop relative to our needs. (Just a thought...)

And for the record, UM ran a different version of the spread with Tebow. The 'spread" simply means that your offense seeks to spread a defense out either laterally or vertically. UM ran basically the same offense with Tebow that he did at BG. It spread teams out, and UM relied on Tebow or his small, quick RBs to pick up yards in the running lanes that were created by spreading the D out.

^^^^^^^^And a dang GOOD thought! We need exciting play-calling in Jones` first season and a few flashy uniforms for 3-4 games, and we will have a TOP 5 RECRUITING CLASS!!

I just do not want to be labeled as a finesse team or soft and the spread kind of caries that label. I hope they in cooperate some sort of power running game at least because in the SEC if you cant make 3and 1 on the ground then you will not win many games in the Conf.

I don't understand where everybody's reservations about the spread are coming from. Were we expecting to win the SEC Championship next year? I wasn't. If you're realistic about your expectations, then you'll realize that Auburn winning a National Title with this offense and Texas A&M beating Bama this year bodes well for the future of the program.

Sure it might struggle some years against the BEST DEFENSE in the country. But that's the thing, so would 120 other teams.

I would venture to say that no one anywhere can definitively say they wont succeed. And vice versa. This scheme, or whatever you prefer to call it, is a more modern approach to football and may be highly effective. On the other hand, it may fail miserably against the type of defenses that reside in the SEC. Hopefully, CBJ is a good coach and will be flexible enough to adapt his offense to his players and his competition.
I disagree. Any style can be effective whether its spread or pro or west coast whatever. If you get the players /athletes and you can make adjustments in games and think on your feet as a coach you will win. I like CBJ and his coaching he just needs players some of whom he has on this team now. We have players that can compete they just need a mind adjustment. Butch brings that to the table IF the players buy in. From what I hear they want to buy in. CBJ gets alot of respect out there and I believe good things are coming.
