Like I said, I had family on both sides of this war and all were southern. They all fought for different reasons and it is documented in family history. Those with slaves fought to protect them. Many who didn't were always told not to trust DC. Some were very loyal to the Union and chose to risk their lives and property to defend the Union.

come on hillbilly!!! you know yankee tex books are not gonna teach anything close to the truth.
Indeed, the 'Yankee' text books (not 'tex' books) do not teach anything close to the truth. They actually mention slavery as a cause leading to the Civil War. We have learned here, in this forum, that the Civil War had absolutely nothing to do with slavery.

Why I dont know dare boss, could be dem dare teachas do be teachin anything I suppose, just dont throw me in da bryer patch:)
??? Is that an homage to Joel Chandler Harris? I've seen the statue if Brer Rabbit in front of the courthouse in Eatonton, GA.

Seriously though, I remember being taught in 8th grade history about black plantation owners like Antoine Dubuclet of Louisiana and William Ellison of S.Car. While rare, people like that did exist. I think I've also seen a figure that just before the civil war over 25 percent of the free blacks in New Orleans owned at least one slave, although I'd guess that most of those are people who bought themselves wives. I'd also be interested to see how current history textbooks deal with the subject of exactly who captured the slaves and then sold them to the primarily Dutch and English slave traders?

Do you really believe slavery had nothing to do with the Civil War or are you just arguing?

One thing still puzzles me about flying the rebel flag. If one is not doing it to be blatantly racist, what is the point of flying it? What aspects of the old deep south does one feel is honored by flying this flag?

I'll admit, my basement is dedicated to the Civil War. Well....along with the tv....but...anywho.

The top part is painted confederate gray the bottom is union blue. In the middle is custom wallpaper of people, pictures and newspapers from the war. On the walls I have artifacts such as hats and swords and a collection of Mort Kunstler pictures. I do have rebel and union flags on the wall.

I have feared to invite some of my african american friends over to the house because I thought they might think I would be a racist southern hick.

Though all of them have laughed at me and jokingly call me a closet klansman.

Great thing about it is that my wife does not really mind. She has actually gained an interest in the time period.

You should have seen at the Stonewall Jackson House on our honeymoon. I was like a kid in the candy store, every time the guide asked a question I would immediately raise my hand and answer the question. Every one would just turn and look at me.

lets go ahead and outlaw the song Dixie while we are at it. might as well go ahead and dig up all the confederate dead and piss on their bones. and while we are at it lets go ahead and destroy every monument dedicated to the confederate dead. the sorry yankee bastards would not even recognize the confederate dead on memorial day. thats why memorial day was not celebrated in the southern states for years. you still have the sons and daughters of the confederacy to this day. most true southners can tell you their family history all the way back to the American revolution. go up north and you might find 1 in 20 who know anything about their family history dating back to the war of northern aggression or the American revolution. its a matter of pride and heritage in the south. some have used the confederate battle flag as a symbol of hate, but most southners who are educated are proud of the flag and its heritage. myself included.

Why exactly would we hold memorials for people who died fighting to dissolve the United States?

This is the flag I choose to fly to honor and celebrate my heritage.

Why is this exact point so hard for Southerners to get their arms around? Is it because those states in the South were exercising some "right" to rent asunder the US and those executing the war were somehow exonerated from turning their backs on the constitution to which they had sworn fealty? I appreciate that Lee cried "tears of blood" when finally deciding to join the rebels, but that doesn't in any way lessen the crime. Benedict Arnold did no more to harm the survival of the United States than those rebels who had previously been US officers.

Now it has switched to the Southern Mystique argument? Do you have the daughters of the confederacy talking points? :)

There is a reason why all those societies, clubs, organizations were formed after the Civil War. The losing side had to make a statement for why they lost.

Good grief, if the South would have had a strong central government they would have faired better.

If the factories in North Carolina would not have charged more for non North Carolina units most if not all of the soldiers in the east would have had proper uniforms. There is a reason why the Tar Heels were always dressed nice.

The same goes with food, the commissar department in Richmond held a 6 month supply of food during the siege of Petersburg.

If the states could have cooperated with something as simple as railroad gauges that would have helped also.

If slavery would have been handled in the early part of the century none of this would have mattered.

Like it or not, slavery was and is the only cause for the civil war. Slavery started and ended every thing.

As I recall the United Daughters of the Confederacy was in favor of changing the GA flag to remove the Confederate battle emblem. And that was back in the days when every pickup truck in GA had a "Forget Zell" bumber sticker.
