The Tennessee "VOLES"??

Actually there us a way. First, most outside of the southern geographical region (SEC) folks are visually bombarded with the abbreviation of our team's name. They constantly see Vols instead of Volunteers. So many today, who are increasingly misusing the English language anyway, slip into this mispronunciation. Many actually think the team's name is Vols and that like most folks don't know what a Hokie is, they don't know what a Vol is except it's associated with University of Tennessee football. Added to this, most never heard a native pronounce the sound of "Vawls" so continue to utter the erroneous noise of "Voles" which they hear from others around them.

Rather than getting all snotty and haughty, we Vols should just smile sweetly, pat them on the hand and say, "It's 'Vawls' buddy, 'Vawls", short for Volunteers."
Educating makes more friends and Vols fans than hating the innocently ignorant.

And then...while they're abuzz with the camaraderie...You :bash::bash::bash::bash::punch_bag::punch_bag::horse::horse::horse::chair::chair:

Vince Ferrar says it all the time, drives me nuts. I can somewhat understand folks from outside the area saying it, but a local sports-talk host?

Yes, I hear it occasionally, and yes, it irritates me.

I watched the replay of the TN - SC game Monday. It was a SC broadcast with their announcers ... and Todd Ellis ( whose voice alone irritates me ) kept calling Palardy Polarity. I kept thinking that someone would correct him. Never did. It continued the entire game right through "Polarity" kicking their azzes out of Neyland as losers.

I mean, look at the Damned Letters, Todd!!

I had an ex-girlfriend call them the Voles once.

She also hadn't seen Top Gun when we started dating either so there's that.

On a side note... how fn good is Ricatoni's!?

The in-laws just moved from Florence and we used to go down there a lot, lol.

Kesling was guilty of "Jagwires" when we played South Alabama. I had to turn it off and quickly find a video stream.

I dont know about you, but it annoys the heck outta me when I have friends outside of the southeast ask me why I cheer for the Tennessee "voles"... I then have to teach an impromptu history lesson on the Mexican-American War that always concludes in me saying "you wouldn't say VOLE-unteer"....

Ignorant masses: this is not our mascot: Vole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Even worse, maybe even our new staff has this problem... listen to Butch at 1:33. I'd like to think he's trying to get under the teams skin, butttttttttttt who knows. ORANGE TINTED GLASSES ON- Go Butch, Go VOLS!

Love Ricatoni's. I used to live right up the street from there. Moved to the other side of town last year, so I don't get over there as much. Now I'm hungry.

I've heard people pronounce it that way over the years...it's those out-o-towners and city folk that aren't properly versed on local diction. Boo them. Boo wendy.

Mispronouncing last names is common and understandable. But if you can't pronounce "vols", there is something wrong...especially if you know it's short for "volunteers". While I'm at it...people whole say "melk" instead of "milk"...C'mon man!
