The TOP 5 for Heisman

He did? I can hardly believe it. He was calling UT fans trailer trash (paraphrasing) and tooting Woodson's horn at every opportunity. I didn't think the voting was public. Probably because it's been a long time since I paid attention to it. Would be interesting in seeing a link showing how everyone voted if it exists.

Fowler himself has said he voted for Manning.

Also, not excusing his comments, but he made those after Woodson won and he had received a lot of negative feedback from fans. Also at the time, ESPN didn't have nearly as big a relationship with the SEC as they do now but did have a big relationship with the Big 10. So if he was in fact campaigning for Woodson, it's most likely because he was told to.

All that makes sense. I just remember how Woodson's heroics in a couple of games pushed him over pretty a pretty solid four seasons for Manning. Granted, Woodson had a couple of spectacular plays.

One theory around the coffee pot is that another SEC QB had won it the year before and the NE sportwriters didn't want to vote for yet another SEC QB two years in a row. That may have played into it some.

I remember in those last two weeks leading into the voting, you could see Woodson being mentioned more and more, when all season long, up until that point, the press was saying Manning was a lock. And what I remember was Fowler crowing pretty loud about Woodson.

Peyton Manning getting robbed of the Heisman Trophy in 1998 tells me all I need to know on how big of a joke the Heisman really is.

Shocker that Henry won it. ESPN hype machine was in full force with their campaigning. Last I checked, the Heisman is most outstanding player, not running back. That's what the Doak Walker is for. McCaffrey is the better overall player.
