I gotta be honest, when Heupel was hired I didn’t know who he was. I was like, oh great another google coach. And I had reservations about him. But I had even more reservations when I saw he brought several assistants from UCF with him. But man, I don’t think we give enough credit to this staff. Minus Martinez, this staff is amazing. Even BJM has been impressive this year. I mean year two undefeated and in the top 5??? Crazy. I am getting more and more confident that we beat Georgia in two weeks.

I said it elsewhere but what this staff has done with a roster like this is nothing short of miraculous.

Martinez is recruiting at a high level getting some real athletes for the secondary. Let's give him some more time to develop them. Gbo!
Yea the people asking for Martinez to be fired doesn’t understand defense. Josh huepel will keep who he thinks is an asset to him. Luckily the fans don’t decide coaching hires/fires.

I've been a Heupel fan since the Texas game in 00' , but I wasn't thrilled about his hiring as our coach, just due to his limited HC experience. Lucky for us , he's as good a coach as he was a qb.

There’s no such thing as a sure thing outside of Saban and maybe a couple others. It appears we’ve struck gold though.

Get rid of Martinez and replace him with someone competent and we can really go places. Would've beat Bama, Florida and Pitt by a lot.

Spend some time looking at the DB's the guy has available (esp last week) and you may find that he's actually getting quite a bit out of them. He's not working with a bunch of 4-5 star talent back there. He was close to having to put in the video assistants last week by the time the game ended.

It's hard to blame this on Martinez. We're down like 4 CBs and a safety right now. After Turnage went down, we had a walk on playing the entire game at one spot, and our 4th string at the other. I think Burrell was better than people gave him credit. People also like to ignore that he literally put two players into the NFL just last year, one of which was never expected to even be a decent player through pretty much his entire career.

I agree this staff has done a beyond excellent job.

After watching LSU dismantle the (7-0) Kif, I am even more convinced.

Admittedly, I don't know if the secondary coach should be ridiculed or praised. Maybe he made chicken salad or maybe he turned the secondary into chicken sh*t. But, I doubt the latter.

GO VOLS ! ! ! !

How do you know he still looks at him as an asset? If we didn’t have the best QB in the country we’re likely sitting at 3-3 right now because of our secondary, and Heupel likely knows that. I imagine at the end of this season regardless of the finish he sits down with Martinez and tells him something to the effect of “our time is now and you’re coaching for your job this upcoming season. If we don’t see drastic improvement in the secondary I’m going to have to start looking at other options”. Do we have All SEC corners? No, but we’re not fielding absolute bums either, and our corner play should be significantly better than what it is

Theo Jackson is a safety and Banks coaches that position group

It's too bad he can't coach them worth a damn, leading us to eventually label them all as "busts" when he has them play extremely soft coverage every game and never turn around to look for the ball.

Not true. What Martinez is doing with what he has is good coaching. A lot of those (blown coverages) have to deal with qbs scrambling and extending the plays to 5-7 seconds, also dbs or linebackers playing zone have to react to that qb and that leaves a hole in the zone.
Martinez is not the problem, talent, depth, and just good players making plays against our defense.

I’m definitely not a football coach, but I think you negative nellies need to pay attention to a few facts. With our offense scoring, and the front seven on defense playing very well, the opponents are passing the majority of the time. Our defense is playing zone a majority of the games to avoid letting the opponents score quickly and put any pressure on Tenn’s offense. If Tenn’s talent is so bad, what do you think of LSU and Bama’s Secondary talent. They looked pretty bad against Tenn’s passing. Today’s game make DBs at a disadvantage. Watch other teams DBs and you will see they give up yds too.

I'll make a deal with you ass-hats who continue to call for coaches to be fired in spite of the fact that we're 7-0 with four Top 25 victories, including a Top 5 win over our most hated rival.

Here's the deal. You shut the F up about firing any of our coaches, and just wait two years.

If at the end of Heupel & Co's fourth season our defensive secondary isn't one of the strengths of our team, then I'll join you in calling for pink slips to be handed out.

But I am pretty positive that won't need to happen.

It is precisely this short-fused readiness to throw coaches to the curb that got us into the Dark Ages in the first place. We do NOT want to return there, so leave Josh Heupel's coaching staff the hell alone!

Complete and utter morans. Butt-heads. Cancers among our fan base, and curses to our program.

I hope I've made it fairly clear how I feel. If not, let me know and I'll be blunter.

Go Vols!

Have the last 2 seasons not proven to all of you “give (x) coach 4 years before firing him” or “you can’t just fire a coach after 2-3 years” nitwits that it doesn’t take that long to see significant progress and have success? The willingness to fire Pruitt after 3 years when it was blatantly obvious he wasn’t going to get the job done is why we’re at where we are.

If we didn’t have the best offensive mind in football along with a QB that will likely be a finalist for the Heisman this would be an average football team at best. Our secondary is that bad, and we will most certainly see a significant drop off in offensive production next year with Hooker leaving. It’s easy to shrug off how bad our defensive backfield is when we’re scoring 40 a game in SEC play, but that’s not going to happen next year and our secondary will likely cost us multiple games.

Defending running QBs and LB play along with pressuring the QB was a huge weakness for us last year. We added zero players at those positions and now those are our strengths. In the SEC you’re either getting better or you’re getting worse and we are by no means getting better at corner. Giving Martinez 4 years at the current rate of development we’re seeing is absolutely preposterous. He should be coaching for his job next season if he’s even retained
