The vast majority of this staff is absolutely amazing

Martinez has been terrible. But it should be expected. He’s not a good secondary coach. May be a good recruiter, not sure. But our secondary sucked under Butch and it sucks now. I couldn’t find all the passing defense stats, but I don’t know that he’s ever had a top 30 passing defense and didn’t crack the top 50 but once in his 4 years here under Butch. He needs to go.

Sorry but z Martinez is the DB coach and they can’t cover.
Sorry but that’s likely a depth issue as I posted a very lengthy explanation on how football works. Or atleast how we’ve been calling our defense. Can’t be on the field 3/4 of the game with 2-3 injuries in your secondary and walk ons on the field and expect them to cover consistently. Just being honest.

Yeah the staff has managed to coach up multiple positions. We’ve brought in Turnage, Hadden, Walker, and Turentine in the portal and it hasn’t worked out yet. Need to keep upgrading, as this and DL will have the highest number of players on the roster. Garner has nailed his part so far.

Saw a post game clip of CJH with his arm around Martinez's shoulder, so I am guessing his analysis of this coach is a bit different and weighted based on the output from the talent available. But what does he know? Maybe he does not want to see the current commits list vaporize.

I'm sure in five years we will be wondering how they all managed to become busts as well, while deflecting from the great Willie Martinez

Then I suggest down the road you ask CJH or someone hard connected to the program and get some facts rather than featuring negative speculation. Here is a fact, right now Coach has allowed 6 of 21 commits to date to be DB's. Probably some additions and adjustments on the way if we continue trending, maybe even some portal help if we remain a sexy destination with playing time.

Guessing our DC is also involved with every aspect of the backend coaching. Should we be featuring a cleaning house on that side of the ball instead?

I gotta be honest, when Heupel was hired I didn’t know who he was. I was like, oh great another google coach. And I had reservations about him. But I had even more reservations when I saw he brought several assistants from UCF with him. But man, I don’t think we give enough credit to this staff. Minus Martinez, this staff is amazing. Even BJM has been impressive this year. I mean year two undefeated and in the top 5??? Crazy. I am getting more and more confident that we beat Georgia in two weeks.

If the defensive backfield play does not improve over the rest of this season, I think Heupel will look for a new defensive backs coach this off season.

I'll make a deal with you ass-hats who continue to call for coaches to be fired in spite of the fact that we're 7-0 with four Top 25 victories, including a Top 5 win over our most hated rival.

Here's the deal. You shut the F up about firing any of our coaches, and just wait two years.

If at the end of Heupel & Co's fourth season our defensive secondary isn't one of the strengths of our team, then I'll join you in calling for pink slips to be handed out.

But I am pretty positive that won't need to happen.

It is precisely this short-fused readiness to throw coaches to the curb that got us into the Dark Ages in the first place. We do NOT want to return there, so leave Josh Heupel's coaching staff the hell alone!

Complete and utter morans. Butt-heads. Cancers among our fan base, and curses to our program.

I hope I've made it fairly clear how I feel. If not, let me know and I'll be blunter.

Go Vols!

How many "likes" can you give one post? This post is spot on. Calling out Coach Martinez, is simply a lazy effort to look cool and relevant on a chat board. Check out: 1) our record against ranked teams given that this system is bound to put intense pressure on the defense; 2) what he has done with marginally talented and injured players; and 3) the wealth of secondary players he is recruiting. Then give the defense a season or two before you call for his or anyone's head. I don't care who coached this secondary group this year. There were bound to be challenges.

Firing coaches should never be the first thing done to improve a team. If any fan base should know that by now, it is this one. Go Vols!

Yes he has. But he has been terrible here this time around.

It's not the coach its the players that he has been given. Injuries have been the biggest issue to a group already behind the power curve. With 3 starters gone from last years team, who didn't seem that good either last year, we can now see how bad our recruiting of DB's have been. They just aren't a flood group.

Goes to the saying "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken ****". The fact that our defense is holding on for dear life when we are that far out-manned in that group is a testament to coaching in my opinion. We managed to beat the reigning Heisman winning QB and #3 team in the nation with a walk-on back there in crunch time. If he had 4 and 5* guys back there getting roasted, then I'd be on board with a change. In my opinion, he and Banks are coaching their rear ends off trying to manage pass coverage.

Yadayada. Our defense is not elite. You knew that preseason. And our offense is not elite tonight. Win as a team. Lose as a team. GoVols.

Nobody thought our defense would be anywhere near elite. But answer me this honestly, did you foresee South Carolina absolutely boat racing us?
