I think the "virus" is a natural occurrence of the human genome, it activates it self to decrease population and weed out weaknesses in our species, mother nature makes it happen when we become over populated, that's why it's already in everyone's system, but babies born after the outbreak are immune to this particular virus and another one is formed that waits 3000 years to activate again. Just my thoughts, how bout y'all!?!

Bringing fiction to real life, it most definitely wouldn't be a "natural" virus as evolutionary theory rules out a "natural" zombie like mutation so it would have to be engineered.
To be able to infect EVERY human without exception however would be miraculous. Even if you managed to infect the whole world there would still be some small portion of the population that wouldn't have symptoms even after death. They would just die and not come back.
I keep wondering if they will find a person or persons that are immune. The comics haven't even gone there but it would interesting to come across someone that had been bitten but hasn't turned (a la The Last of Us).
Since it was revealed in Season 2 that everybody now is infected...I assume that the bitten are dying from a bacterial infection from the Walker's bite (no antibiotics, etc).
A regular human bite frequently gets infected without proper treatment. I can just imagine all the nasty bacteria growing in a Walker's mouth...
They become sick from a bacterial infection from the bite. Then septic (overwhelming infection) that kills the bitten person. Once they die from the infection, then the Walker substance takes over...new Walker arises
Then what about the ones who aren't bitten and rise and bite others.
I think it's as simple as introducing the active virus to the victims blood stream which shuts everything down to activate the dormant virus in the person who was bitten, which is why cutting off a limb in time may work.
Like I said, I think the idea is that a walker has the virus at its active state while a living person has a dormant virus that is triggered by something with death. If a walker bites you, it introduces a live/active virus which kills you and jump starts the dormant virus to be active.I'm just saying the Walker virus is already there so the bite does not transmit it .
Whatever kills the person then allows the Walker virus to resurrect the body as a Walker.

I'm not saying that's medical science but I think that's the intended logic.
I agree with this take. If it were simply a bacteria infection, we'd see more emphasis on sterilization after someone gets bit; things like rubbing alcohol would be gold.
"The rule is WHATEVER it is that causes the zombies, is something everyone already has. If you stub your toe, get an infection and die, you turn into a zombie, UNLESS your brain is damaged. If someone shoots you in the head and you die, you're dead. A zombie bite kills you because of infection, or blood loss, not because of the zombie "virus.""

Well, damn. From the man himself.
The blood loss part is plausible; the infection part is not. Most wound inflections take a minimum of 48 hours to take hold and become fatal.
In the show, it's portrayed as happening in a few hours.
Also, we've not seen anyone get slightly bit and shrug it off; which should happen given the above explanation.
