The War on Drugs has Failed

My uncle is currently being destroyed by meth. He still denies it, but I have found it personally. He has went from a 220lb man, to maybe 150 if he is lucky. He lost his well paying gvt job, his house, boat, wife, and kids. He is just another example of what they can and will do.

Here is another angle on the question of drugs being legal. As we have seen with the alcohol and tobacco lobby becoming very powerful, many times the public's health was an afterthought and big money via campaign contributions won out with lawmakers.

I think it very likely over time the same would be very true about the drug lobby as well, not to mention the lobby would be made up of our enemies in many cases.

Are you serious? The only person harmed is the drug user? What about their children, spouses, parents, the people they steal from to get drug money, the people killed over turf wars by drug dealers and users?

How has the government proved anything of the sort? I wasn't aware that drugs were made legal and it had been shown that enforcement was less effective than actually letting them be made available everywhere, anytime.

They are not illegal in some countries in Europe. They aren't spending millions fighting it, and guess what? The country didn't fall apart....

They are illegal now, so why are all all these people being harmed in this country by them? if making them illegal stopped people from using, then why hasn't it worked?

Sure, if they would actually eliminate the cause.

They won't, so no, we should not continue the war on drugs.

Should they be legal? Do you not think the problems associated with drugs would get worse if they became easier to obtain?

I can go outside of my office and get what ever I want within 150ft of this building I am sitting in.

So do you think they should be illegal (save MJ)?

I don't think them being illegal will keep people from using i just think it helps to keep them underground and a little harder to obtain. Granted they are easy enough to find if you are using but the harder to obtain the better as far as I'm concerned.

See bold above.

For the record I think we do waste a lot of money fighting drugs but they still need to be kept illegal and stiff penalties need to be enforced JMO.

Much of that depends on where you are though. I know when I used to be involved in "questionable activity" finding drugs was no problem. I moved away from the area I grew up in because i wanted to raise my family away from those influences. I just don't want it to follow me where I live now. Hell if we could get rid of them altogether would be a lot better, it will never happen though.

From prior experience, you will be suprised at some of the places you can buy from. I have had friends in the past that did some crazy stuff and I would go with them to buy. Sometimes it was in the traditional bad part of town, but I remember some times going to houses in upstanding, middle-high class neighborhoods. You just can never tell anymore IMO

Very true. In the traditional bad parts of town though you don't even have to be looking for it, they will actually come to you. In better neighborhoods you actually have to know the right people to buy from, you have to actively seek it out there. If there is no longer any tough penalty for drugs what is going to stop better neighborhoods from being over run with aggressive drug dealers?

I went to a braves game back in July. After the game I hit up the Varsity as always. I had this homeless looking dude just come up to me and ask me if I wanted any pills, coke, etc. Sure enough, opened his trench coat and tahdah! I guess he picked me cause I do have a Sublime and Grateful Dead sticker on the back of my Jeep.

It can be done.....finally someone said they did not want organized crime powerful any more and RICO was created.

No one wants to because lawyers and politicians are major players in the drug market.

It wasn't really until the 19-20th century that drug laws were formed. Drugs were around all the way back in ancient Roman and Chinese cultures. Its unfair to compare drug use in their time to drug use in our time, but its still a good thought.

Very true, only today the drugs available seem to be even more potent.

Same reason you don't neighborhoods over run with aggressive beer sellers.

Very true. Technology has gotten involved in the drug market. Although, the Chinese used to smoke straight opium back in the day. That stuff will knock you off your feet.
