The Weightlifters Thread

I see no value in them. Especially when people get crazy and start doing incline and decline cable flys.

I also don't buy into the "you have to try your lower, middle, and upper chest" bs.

If you are saying don't do decline and incline, I completely disagree. Decline >>> flat bench

It's a more natural motion and easier on your shoulder joints. Dorian Yates swears by it. He recommends starting with decline.

I also love cables, though I don't use the bench like you mentioned.

I wouldn't say cable flys are pointless, but lifters spending an excessive amount of time on a machine/apparatus are annoying

Mike Mentzer has an interesting take on machines. He says use them for everything, if possible. He says they are ideal for isolating the target muscles and you eliminate cheating.

I don't disapprove of bench variations. I simply disapprove of the idea that you have to work "top, bottom, and middle" of your chest.

Am the only one who is tired annoyed with people who just do ridiculous exercises?

I'm waitin to do pull downs on some kid who has been doing cable flys for like 30 minutes now.

Am I the only who sees no point to that exercise?

IF it isn't heavy its pointless.

I prefer to alternate between flat bench and incline. I find that including incline helps with the definition between the top of the chest and shoulders. But hey thats just how my chest works.

Cable flys are a good last exercise and pump on chest day..again for me.

No offense, but this is the worst lifting philosophy, IMO. It may work for you, but I think the best results are attained by controlling weight, not moving it. Isolate the muscle. It's not about the weight, it's how you lift it. Obviously you need decent resistance, but if you aren't in it for power lifting there is no point to going heavy and incorporating muscle groups that aren't supposed to be part of the lift. I see people with the worst form on cables cause they try to go heavy.

Which always confuses me, because most of us who are into going heavy, aren't doing reverse grip, underhand, clapping, inverted decline cable flys to begin with.

I always use cables for isolation and low weight high rep stuff. I just do bench/squat/dead/military press/rows as my core lifts and toss in a few extras depending on how I feel that day.

What are people doing on cables with bad form? You have crossfitters lurking in your gym?? :whistling:

Was in they gym this morning and saw a chick doing seated cable rows while holding the phone up to her ear and talking to somebody. Must be a hell of a workout.

Must be one of those people who do the same weight every day on each exercise.

"Why am I not losing weight, I've been doing the same weight on these cable rows for 5 years now, yet I see no results?"

People do everything with bad form.

The worst I've seen on cables is a guy literally leaping off the ground transitioning between the negative and the positive. It's so weird, I don't even know how to describe it better than that.

Also, I found this ironic, but my wife's yoga instructor has the worst lifting form I've ever seen. How is that possible? Yoga is nothing but form. I guess it doesn't translate.

Trying the 30 days out routine on bodybuilding.com. Typically I prefer powerlifting routines, but I've been stuck around 195 and 20% bf for awhile now.

Leg day was brutal. You only get 30 seconds rest between sets.

Leg press 10x3 450
Front squat 6x5 185 for first 4 135 for last two
Bridges 5x6 80lbs
Lunges 3x10 20lb DBS
Single leg leg press, 1x30 50lbs

Tried the tabata afterwards but I couldn't get off the ground to jump rope.

Upper Body Speed Day

Speed Bench

50lb Bar

10x3 @280

Close Grip Bench/2 boards

4x8

set 1...280lbs
set 2...320lbs
set 3...340lbs
set 4...350lbs

Cable Push Downs w/Fat Bar

4x10

set 1...105lbs
set 2...120lbs
set 3...135lbs
set 4...150lbs...only 5 reps

Cable Crossovers (just for you 8188 :) )

I can't understand having your back to the wall and no spotter. It's as if he's never struggled to get the weight up on power cleans. One time will scare **** out of you into being smarter.

Look past the Crocs, I went to do Dead Lifts but realized when I got there that I left my belt in my truck, which my wife had drove to her mom's, 2hrs away. I put my Chucks on after I get to gym, but since I wasn't doing Dead Lifts, I didn't...

Agreed.

I have little sympathy for someone that is that careless with their setup and refusal to abandon a failed lift.

However, I'll be more than glad to take those Rehband knee sleeves from him.

Anyone else love using a hexbar for dead lifts? It just feels more balanced than having to use an over/under grip.
