The Weightlifters Thread

Bulking has been fun, and I still need plenty of muscle, but I can't wait to cut 4 pounds in April and hit 8% :)

I've never really focused on body fat % and just try to bulk up and get stronger. I typically fluctuate between 16-20% and now that I'm trying to lean out I have a new found respect for people that work to get their % lower. It's tough and I think it would be good for anyone to set a goal and realize how important nutrition plays a part in it.

Solid points. I agree that fitness enthusiasts, competitors, etc. are owed a degree a respect specifically for their abilities to lower their body fat % to elite levels while acquiring aesthetics and maintaining strength. We fitness hobbyists are guilty of underestimating our fat mass levels concerning our own body fat %. After years of using various methods of testing body fat %, it has been rare in my experience to witness a male athlete have less than 8% body fat.

As bad as I want that 8% as anyone else, because I do not compete in bodybuilding, in my own opinion, it would not be completely ideal. It would make more sense for me to lean down to the 10-12% range then slowly bulk 1-2 lbs. per month.

On Sunday I tore my patellar tendon and the meniscus in my left knee. Does anyone have any experience with this injury and can shed some light on what I'm in for (recovery and rehab). Meeting with orthopedic on Thursday. Had MRI yesterday and just got results.

Bummed out.

I tore my meniscus in college. The doc said to put a pillow under my knee so it is elevated and rotate ice and heat.

The tendon I have no clue about.

Yikes that's very unfortunate. Best wishes to you in your road to recovery. Hopefully a minor setback for a major comeback

Thanks. Meet with ortho today to determine path.

My CNS was fried from 2 1/2 cycles of my modified version of the Smolov Jr. program. I made some good gains but even with a week of deloading between each 4-8 week cycle, I couldn't recover enough. 6 weeks ago I started Wendler's 5/3/1 over again with the last training maxes that I used before starting Smolov. I'm actually following a modification of the program found in "Beyond 5/3/1". I'm really excited about slowly building my strength on the big 4 lifts.

I've always done high bar, but I'll try low bar. It looks uncomfortable, but I'm all for increasing my power.

I just switched to low bar recently after reading Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength. It's taken a little getting used to, but I think I'm going to prefer it to high bar.

Cutting season is on!

Hope to hit 8.00% in 4-6 weeks... Maybe sooner. This is my first week, so I'll get a better idea at the end of the week.

Calories 1,800 + 200 on workout days
30/35/35 macros
Fasted training +BCAA
No cardio
Intermittent fasting 8/16 hour windows
Currently cycling off of caffeine but will pick it up again in a couple of weeks.

Wish me well!

Keep us updated for sure. I always enjoy cutting weight without utilizing cardio. It tends to make me even more disciplined with my energy intake.

Start of day 6, and I am down 4 pounds.

Since this is my first week, a lot of that is water, glycogen and lack of stomach contents.

I am looking fairly leaner though. Dietary compliance has been spot on. It's never an issue for me. I think the hardest thing is sticking with my original plan. The more you read, the more you begin to think/overthink. I'm considering a "refeed" day tomorrow, but will resist. I want to see what one week of a sustained deficit with no carb or calorie cycling does.

I pulled a PR deadlift today. Halfway through my leg workout, I just wanted to give it a go.

Normally, I pull wide stance, but not quite sumo, finding conventional position a bit dicy for my back. I tried conventional anyways and nailed 315, which is 2 x my body weight. My totals on the big three lifts currently is 915. Still working towards 1,000. Tons of room for dead lift improvement. Squats (355) and bench (245) are gonna take more work.

Hadn't lifted in over 3 weeks. Longest hiatus in 8 years. Got back in the gym yesterday and it was amazing. I felt like I was going to explode.

Sure enough it was a 70% tear of patellar. He said I re-aggravated a tear of my meniscus but it is an old injury. I have to keep leg immobilized for 3 months and then start rehabilitation. Right now I am still doing upper body and swimming with a brace for cardio.

Went back home this weekend and last, multiple people told me I look absolutely ripped.

One of my buddies said somebody asked if I was on roids. I laughed and said "if I am I'm doing it wrong."

It really feels good when other people notice.

What's your estimated BF%?

Awesome. Any chance you have access to a Bod Pod or hydrostatic weighing for your BF% testing?
