The WRASSLIN’ Thread

Part of this is just plain silly talk. The Rock and Stone Cold would have been stars today as well because they were great characters that could promo their asses off. Stone Cold was no in ring slouch either.

U all must not remember Austin before stone cold gimmick or Rocky Mavia

WCW winning is part of the reason Vince let those guys develop more edgy characters. Today, with no major competition for WWE, we might very well be seeing Rocky Mavia versus the Ringmaster every week on Main Event (if anyone still watches Main Event).

It's really an apples to oranges comparison between today and the Attitiude Era.

This guy gets it . The attitude Era created Stone Cold and The Rock

We do, they shined through that **** and went through the roof to become 2 of the biggest stars of all time. Let's see what these current undeveloped guys can become, like Jason Jordan and Big Cass and Velveteen Dream.

Disagree completely . If Austin was so good then why didn’t do well in wcw and ecw

If you've ever heard Austin talk about it before, you'd know that he used to be more of a wrestler, a mat technician, until he got hurt and knew he needed to change his style. He developed more of a character and became more of a brawler.

I wasn't necessarily agreeing with your side of the argument however. I was trying to say this is a pointless debate.

In 1999, there were 10 million people watching two competing wrestling shows every week, and both companies were doing everything they could to get all 10 million to watch their show. Today there is only one company with less than half the total viewers. It is unknowable to say that Austin could come into today's WWE and draw the same money he drew in the Attitude Era. It's equally impossible to say that someone like Kevin Owens could be placed in the 90s and become a true superstar just because he's a better in ring performer than most from that time.

This is all just my opinion on the Attitude Era vs. today argument.

I’m not saying Austin could draw the same from the 90s. But he’d easily make it in today’s world, even with a toned down gimmick.

But, with all the indie/international stars WWE is signing today, would a watered down version of Stone Cold even be a possibility. It’s very likely that Austin would get one semi big push when he debuts as the Ringmaster, fail miserably, and then be relegated to jobber status.

He was a borderline top guy in WCW as Stunning Steve. He held tag belts and U.S. title. He was injured while in ECW for about 15 minutes

That's EXACTLY what WWF was in the process of doing to him...... until the Madison Square Garden incident when they hit the brakes on the push they were about to give HHH and pushed Austin instead.

Austin would still be a big star but I think in today's wrestling world Rock would struggle some with his promos. The catchphrases would not work like they did in 2018. JMO

I feel confident he could adapt.

As for Austin, worst case scenario, his first gimmick fails, he crushes it in IMPACT, then comes back stronger than ever in WWE.

I was thinking the opposite. Rock can work with PG...Austin not so much.

I agree, but I can’t figure out where they’re going with it unless it’s Shane vs Bryan, loser leaves Smackdown which I don’t like

When Shane started with the "look, you've done a lot here, created the yes movement...blah blah blah" I thought it was gonna lead to him releaving him of his GM duties which would eventually lead to him wrestling again.

It seemed like something to escalate the heat between the two to me
