Step 1.
Don’t shoot yourself in the hand.

You’d be surprised how often that happens.
When nailing things together don’t hold it items in a way that the nail can skip off the wood or twist out and hit you.

I once loaned a framing gun to a neighbor who shot himself with a 3 1/2 inch framing nail with the first pull of the trigger

Never hold the wood within 9 inches of the barrel. Seems like common sense but when you get into a project it’s easy to forget.

The nail is driven be a hammer so unlike a real gun it loses penetration velocity in less than a foot. It will still hurt like a mother but won’t penetrate.
