Since my last project I shared on here went well. And has not been used in over a year, but I digress...
About a year ago I got a dead riding mower from my neighbor with the intention of building a battery powered go-kart for the kids. It started off pretty well, but after a while it became clear that it would not work as I had hoped. The frame just is not sturdy enough or wide enough without adding reinforcements and my attempts to teach myself to weld have not gone well.
Fast forward to last week and I found this on Craigslist for $100. Solid foundation for the new build. And I have abandoned the battery power idea and will go traditional gas power with a torque converter. The engine should be here next week sometime hopefully. My best guess is it will go about 30 mph or so with the sprocket that is on there. Should be ready for fun/injuries by early August.

I have watched hours of videos. My problem probably lies with my el cheapo welding helmet. I just cannot see the puddle. I have no doubt I can do a decent job, but I just cannot see well enough and so it gets off line.

Anybody do brake jobs? I don't mind working on pretty much anything, but I don't do brakes anymore. Nothing bad happened, I just hate it🤣. Just wondering if I'm alone since we're at the dealership getting a brake job.

The first car this dealership ever sold. They bought it back, and restored it for the libby. The old man who started it was a preacher, his son is an evangelist in our area, and his grandson went through the men's home I worked with. I was with his grandson when he got clean, and straightened his life up a few years ago. He's actually a preacher now, and lives up towards Chattanooga somewhere. I got to know the family working with the grandson, and did business here before I ever met him.IMG_20220810_133701455_HDR.jpg

From the finished product until I paint it like this

Guys, one thing that has kept me off VN for the better part of 10 years (besides having young kids and the negativity around football during that span...) has been staying busy with DIY projects around the house. When we moved to Pittsburgh we bought a home built in 1994. Much older than the other two homes we had in Memphis and Warner Robins, and now I have more disposable income to make improvements. Back when we were first married, most of our funds were being eaten just paying mortgages.

Anyway, what you got? I know I'm proud of my work and want to show it off. I want to see what everyone else has been doing as well. Especially coming out of the 2-year "work from home" bonanza. Surely a lot of others have been working on their castles like I have.

First project I did was a simple bathroom reno. The tile was green, and a linen closet taking up too much space with a vanity just far too small. Ripped out the closet, pulled up the tile, and put in a new vanity. Pretty happy with my tile work, but my drywall skills just aren't there. Probably should get a professional to come and fix it. Especially ceiling work. Tough to get the texture to match someone else's work, and just generally difficult working over your head if you aren't used to it. Did this in 2018.

Tackled the master bath next in early 2019. Had one of those cubby showers with three sides and a soffit that made it feel like you were going into a damp cave to take a shower. Removed one side to open it up to being a corner shower with lots more glass and removed the soffit to make it more open. Took out the vanity and one of those massive contractor mirrors. Decided the tile was fine, but needed to do something around the new shower footprint so I used some subway tile to make an accented edge. Another place where my drywall work let me down, and I should have a pro fix it at some point.

Next project we moved outside. October 2020. Just had a baby girl within 6 months, but didn't let that stop me. House had a big 8' tall pressure treated lumber retaining wall next to the driveway. It was starting to rot, and there was no access to the back yard from that side of the house. Decided to replace the timber with a versa-lok block wall and add stairs. Rented a backhoe to remove the existing wall and dig out the necessary fill to construct the block wall. My material takeoff was bad and had a TON of blocks left. Made a few mistakes with one area settling pretty badly in the last two years, but overall really proud of how it turned out.

Last one for now. Current project, started in April 2022. With all the extra block I decided it would be nice to build another retaining wall in the hillside of my back yard. Make a new patio, and make use of wasted space. Tried to rent a skid steer to work on it in Fall 2021, but it was so wet in the yard I buried the thing to the frame and had hell getting it out. Decided to bite the bullet and dig it all by hand. If I'm willing to go on long walks for exercise, why not dig for exercise instead? Got the patio constructed. Now I have to figure out what to do with all this dirt and build some knee walls along the rest of the base of the hill. This has taken forever, but I'm pretty happy with how the result is looking. Post more as I progress...
