I've been tooling around with wood pallets lately. Built a Liquor Shelf, a planter, a stand alone pantry. I've also built a custom kids playhouse. (Not the kit kind )

I'll have to upload pics when I'm back in the states.

Great thread idea

I've been doing the same recently. So far it's only been a headboard and a couple of different types of shelves but I think I'm going to keep screwing around with stuff and take on a few more projects.

1.. I either screwed them directly into the aprons and tabletop or I used a "cross member" caddy corner between the aprons and used long screws to snug them in.. much like other furniture makers do.

2. The finish I use on most pieces is steel wool soaked in vingear for about a month. It causes a chemical reaction and makes a dark stain. But when applied to the wood it doesn't overly darken it but mainly brings out the character and natural hues in the wood. I also used different oil finishes on a few.. but mostly the vinegar. Then I use polycrylic to seal it. It is water based and dries clear. I have also used wax finishes on some.

3. On the tops I used biscuits, glue and screws. Alot of the wood is from barns over 100 years old so I used all of those to minimize any movement as the top acclimates to its new home.

I don't build items to sell anymore.. got tired of being lowballed and beat up on prices. I just build for my personal use and family occasionally.

The table bench legs were drilled partway through the leg and then screwed into the board attached down the center. That's why it is so thick so the legs could be screwed in deep. Then the holes were hidden with pegs and sanded down. I also glued them. Three screws per leg. I have never seen them attached this way. I wanted to make something that looked different.

Sorry I missed it in the first reply... been a long say lol.

I guess time will tell on the legs. In have never seen that before but it looks like you know what you are doing. Ain't heard about the vinegar thang either.

They were very solid.. each leg had 3 - 3" screws holding them to the center 2x..

It's a decent ebonizing solution for oak and other tannin rich woods. If you're using it on pine, which doesn't have many tannins, brew up a pot of strong tea and give it a wash coat with that first.

I built this little side table a number of years ago out of a red oak slice from a neighbor's yard:
