Things I'm happy about today

We got the new sugar maple planted in the front yard. Prolly get the red maple planted Sunday afternoon when we’re back from the lake.
Red maple is now in.

Hubs’ birthday present to me is officially the digging of two big holes in the front yard. Beats jewelry every time. (Well, after the wedding anyway.)

They were both in 15-gal containers. The red maple is bigger and fuller; probably a year older, plus they grow faster. Note: it was mostly green Friday, bright yellow this morning, and already this afternoon is a darker gold with red flecks beginning to appear. This chit is just fascinating to me.

Sugar maple ‘Flashfire”, about 8.5’ tall, just beginning to turn:

Red maple ‘Brandywine’, nearly 10’ tall, see above re colors:

@VolNExile, did they take down the tree at the curb in front of your house?
We’re still arguing.

Currently, they say that they will leave most of the trees on our side of the street (intricate hand-waving explanation involving slope of land, ADA, and existing retaining walls.)

But it appears that they want to remove almost all on the other side. Same intricate explanation, but basically: that side is where the power transmission line is.

— The reason we planted the two maples IN OUR YARD (= on our property, not City right-if-way) is because the street maples will die eventually, whether because of the city, or from old age. I want the city to hold off for a few years + we plant as many large replacement trees as possible to lessen the shock of losing so many mature trees at once.
