Milton has grown since last year. Why everyone is so down on him is crazy. He has played well in his opportunities and another off season with Heup can only help. I believe he will get us through. Like many 8-4 to 9-3 would be a solid bridge year for 23 imo. Admittedly I have not really looked at next seasons schedule but KY, UF, Bama will all be on the road. We also will play Georgia at home. I believe we get A&M in Knoxville. No telling what happens with them. So yeah I think next year 8-4 is the floor.

I fully expect us to take a step back next season...9-3 or 10-2 at best.
Milton is good, but just doesn't have all the tools Hooker has and Jackson and Nico won't be ready yet.

That said - look out for 2024...we will dominate everyone we play and it will be EPIC.
You mean the same tools hooker had when Milton won the job? Heupel took an average to above average QB and turned him into a Heisman contender.
Why can't he do the same for Milton?

THAT is the question of questions to be answered next spring and fall for sure !!!
Right now, nothing shows that Heupel can't turn Milton into Hooker 2.0 or better.

I've based my opinion on the limited time I've seen Milton in game time situations and he just doesn't seem to have the rapid response decision making skills that Hooker possesses.

In fairness he really hasn't had any meaningful time however there is this dime

Defense will for sure be better next year. Our defense this year will continue to get better. GBO!

We will need to be not only very active but very, very successful in the portal and even then, I'm not expecting another season like this one. We can't help but take a step or two back. I'm not sold on Milton and I've seen one of the best who ever played the game struggle as a freshman at UT. Nico might be the next UT great, but if Manning needed time, I can guarantee you that Nico will, too. Unless the kid becomes a workout warrior and transforms his body over the next 6-8 mos, he'll be lucky to survive the first half of the season. Some LB or DE will break that kid in two. We'll have holes to fill everywhere. I'd say 8-9 wins will be about right....if we're successful in the portal.
IMO, there are no "good" scenarios where Jackson or Nico start a game for UT next fall. As you said, Nico needs physical and mental development.

I won't be surprised if the Vols take a step back. A&M could get their act together also. Not sure what to think of UF.

I also don't know whether to think Bama is slipping or just had an off year. What will they look like without a certified star at QB?

Lots and lots of moving parts in the SEC right now. I just hope UT continues to be one of the ones moving up rather than down.

I think the people thinking Milton will be solid are deceiving themselves. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see it. I think he'll consistently throw uncatchable rockets at people at 10-15 yards and keep missing the long ones, leading to a QB controversy early in the season. Again, would LOVE to be wrong.
I think you are. If you are right then one of the best will have tried to work with Milton and failed. Hooker was a failure at VT as well. He's now in the Heisman conversation and playing on a team that might make the playoff... even win a NC with some great breaks.

Milton will have had two years plus working on touch and decision making. The latter is my greatest concern. If UT is forced to Nico or Jackson then it will be a difficult year.

I think we take a step back next year. We loose Hooker, Tillman, most likely Hyatt and a ton on defense. The sky's the limit on 2024. Nico will have a year in the system and I truly believe he could end up being the greatest QB we've ever had.

Film room and some of that Heupel magic may impact Milton in a great way. Let's hope for Milton he achieves what he has the talent to do

I'll be surprised if we don't get some major help out of the portal.

We won't be handicapped like we were last year.

I also wouldn't be shocked if we just reload.

I mean just getting a stud running back would be a huge boon for our offense.
This is a real possibility. Can you imagine how good we can be once Heup has a roster of players he recruited

"Rapid response decision making skills" I don't see Hooker as possessing elite skills in that dept

Considering the fact that this is not a full Huepel roster, I'd say this ain't even our "one". 2024 we'll have three straight full classes in here. If he took mostly Pruitt players and some transfers to the number one spot, then he's very likely to take his own players to the top and hang around a while.

So no. No one and done here bruv...

I think we take a step back next year then each year will be improvements. We lose a lot of leaders off this years team
Agree. JH has had winning QB play everywhere he has coached and will be no different next year. To me, it's like when we had Admiral and Grant Williams. They were great players and leaders and there was a bit of a drop off, while Barnes reloaded. We've got great senior players/leaders, but may take a bit of time to get back to high level...worst case, we're in the 9-3 range...which will probably be the floor, IMO.

I'm not sure finishing 10-2 would be a step back. But I also believe we will recruit well enough this year to prevent a large setback. We will also selectively use the transfer portal to fill immediate needs. One immediate need we have is a big, bruising running back who can carry the ball 20-25 times a game.

Just keep building the roster. They may dip because Hooker has been lightening in a bottle to a extent. The offense will have everything but a proven trigger man. The defense i expect to be better if Tim Banks is the right guy for the future. The Oline may be a question mark too. As long as Heupel remains committed here i think we're in for some really good years.
