Heck we may have been able to even get Kansas HC Bill Self as well after that performance today right? :birgits_giggle: :cray: :lolabove:

How many other programs that were in the Elite 8 last year have coaching vacancies?

There is no excuse for UT, with the facilities and the money it has, to have to settle for bottom feeders. Yet, Hamilton decides to not only in basketball (which might be excusable, but also in football).

There is no excuse for Hamilton to make this hire now and even less of an excuse for the University to have kept Hamilton on the payroll to make anymore hires.

not a bad hire, a TERRIBLE hire.

WE ARE TENNESSEE. We don't hiring rising stars, we hire PROVEN WINNERS.

Uhhh... You need to drop the knee jerk reaction and start doing a little research. Oh and drop the "We are the Spartans" Retinue, while your at it. They all died at Thermopylae.

And BTW, when you research his record, you'll see he is a proven winner. I suggest Google as a starting point.

So then you agree we may have been able to get Kansas HC BILL SELF after today's performance against up and coming HC Shaka Smart with half the talent as Kansas has? Very interesting.

Which more to my point, it's not really that hard to make the NIT field for them.

I saw the same thing, too. Looking at the records of the previous few years before Cuonzo, it seemed like there was a major drop off before he arrived (something like 17-16) which culminated in his worst season (his first). But there was a dramatic improvement in his next 2 seasons, so I am hopeful.

Although I'm sure we could have done better, I must say that the hiring of Cuonzo Martin as our new basketball coach is a nice step in the right direction.

I will admit that I had never heard of Coach Zo until tonight. But after doing some research on him, I am impressed with him and what he brings to the table. Here is the press release from utsports.com. Apologies if this has already been posted.

UT Names Cuonzo Martin Basketball Coach University of Tennessee Athletics

As you can see, Missouri State's teams were abysmal before Zo's arrival. Overall, he was 61-41 in three seasons there, and improved his teams from 3-15 in MVC play in his first season to 15-3 in his third. Not too shabby, in my opinion. That goes without saying, his teams look impressive; very sound, hard-nosed, and disciplined. How his schemes will fare here at Tennessee and in the SEC remains to be seen, but for the most part, I like what I see so far.

He is also a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 1997, but he is in full remission. He has worked tirelessly to raise awareness for cancer research. One can bet that the annual OUTLIVE game will have much more meaning than ever before.

I am not disappointed. Could we have done better? Possibly. But right now, I offer no complaints.

Welcome to Rocky Top, Coach Zo! Big Orange Country is behind you every step of the way! :loco:

+1. We need to give him our full support.

Adversity in sports is nothing after battling cancer. I think he will be very level-headed under stress.

What happened to all the folks who said that UT basketball had improved their stature during the Pearl years to the point that we could attract a decent coach? So much for needing Hamilton to stay on board in order to hire the best possible candidate. Instead he shoots us in the foot again by hiring Derek Dooley v2.0. I just can't wrap my head around how the man keeps his job in spite of making one crap hire after another. We had a good run under Pearl, it just sucks to get reminders like this of UT's place in the college basketball universe.

Haters quit hatin' now it is all about the "ZO SHOW" in Knoxville. And the ZO will bring it....believe that!

Oh please, If he survives two years here I'll be shocked...I told you that UT doesn't care about men's basketball but nobody believed me...There's your proof

UT had made 6 six straight NCAA tournaments including 2 trips to the sweet 16 and one trip to the elite 8 and UT hired a guy who hasn't coached NCAA tournament game yet.

This guy might be a great coach, just seems like UT could have hired a more proven coach.

Quote from an article I read from 2009:

"Cuonzo Martin is now in his second season as the head coach of the Missouri State Bears and already has them undefeated and ranked in the top 25."

I thought we had a formula with Pearl that worked. Find a coach from a small school that makes an impressive run in the NCAA tournament and then offer him more money and impress him with UT's facilities. It worked with hiring Pearl why couldn't UT have used the same formula again.

I have nothing against the hire, I just feel he's unproven.
