This is NOT a Bad Hire.

This hire isn't exactly what I expected. Or wanted for that matter.

Hell, I'll be the first to admit that I had no clue who Cuonzo Martin was until I Wikipedia searched him about 5 minutes ago. And heck, Cuonzo Martin might very well be the best coach who has ever coached at Tennessee. However, as a head coach, he only has had 3 seasons of experience, and has no NCAA tournament appearances.

It's not that I won't support him and the basketball program 100%, which I will. It's just there's a lingering feeling that we could have gotten someone better and more proven that kind of bothers me.

Good fit for Tennessee, IMO. Just like the Dooley hire. Tennessee *claims* tradition, integrity and character-building in student athletes (you can debate it if you like, but we still claim that) is most important to the Athletic Dept.; which is why the Kiffin hire was such a puzzling thing to some of us. Like Dooley, Martin has a lot to learn as a head coach and with the right help (like Dooley's staff has helped him) he will be admired in time, and maybe even win big. No flash, no temporary quick fix on their way to the next job, just a hard worker. It's so "Tennessee". Keep a watch, hands on the wheel, steady as she goes. Martin fits right in. Hope he does well.

And BTW, when you research his record, you'll see he is a proven winner. I suggest Google as a starting point.

ok, i'll play along. Google.. Got it.

His record is: 61 wins and 41 losses at a Missouri Valley Conference school.

let's look at the MVC
Bradley
Creighton
Drake
University of Evansville
Illinois State University
Indiana State University
Missouri State University
University of Northern Iowa
Southern Illinois University
Wichita State University

his signature out of conference win was auburn. yawn.

Now if you just want to go by records.. then that's a .598 winning percentage when getting the advantage of scheduling THOSE above teams 2 times a year. wow. not impressive any longer is it? Well, let's look deeper.
I took a look around the MVC and just found a couple of guys who were MORE qualified than coach Zo.

First, let's look at Ben Jacobson UNI 109-56 and beat Kansas in the NCAA last year. he has a .661 winning percentage
Ben Jacobson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Secondly, let's look at
Tim Jankovich - Illinois State, 83-49 a .629 winning percentage

Thirdly, Chris Lowery at Southern Illinois with a 133-92 record (equals .591).

So, i just very quickly looked up 3 coaches from the same conference who have been there about the same number of years (+ or - 1) and have BETTER (or equal) records than coach Zo.

this was 10 minutes work, i'm sure in more time I could provide more DATA on proven winners from the MVC. (HA HA HA). When I say proven winners, i mean big name guys who are good. Wright-Villanova etc)

Well done. Good researched post. Prepare to be flamed off the board tonight for not supporting the coach, but can't really argue with anything you posted.

Good thing he didn't only have 5 players on scholarship when he got there with a program in disarray. Oh wait...

I am a football season ticket holder and a 2 time alumni. I support the program as much as it sometimes hurts. i LOVE my vols or i wouldn't be here on this forum. As far as flames go, i am not afraid of internet bullies, i have earned my stripes and I am entitled to my opinion.

Anybody who thinks the UT Chancellor and President are going to be fired over a basketball coach is flat out delusional.

I wouldn't expect many on this board to know this...but the University of Tennessee claiming those things goes back quite a bit before the latest craze...and also, a lot further back than those three guys. I'm for UT, straight ahead.
