This Year's two deep

Sauls return in good form is important for the D-line. Also, I'll be disappointed if Justin King doesn't work his way onto the field. The kid is a great athlete. It's time for him to show up and show out.

I hope J. Carr gets moved to OT and shines. With the player's coming in we need him there far more IMO.

I agree. He has a perfect build for tackle and we need depth at OT much more than at DT. Especially since it's looking like Jordan Williams will move inside and we have 3-4 DTs coming in over the summer.

In contrast to how other's have listed here I can foresee Randolph moving to SS and TKJr taking over the FS spot.

I think that's jumping the gun a bit. Bates is good but JRM is also good has the experience and is also good. I don't think he will jump him as the starter. If that happens I would be worry about the rest of our season.

Agree, Bates is going to be great buy JRM is athletic and proved he was a play maker last year. He's not going to be easy to overtake. Not saying it won't happen, but not sure it happens next year.

i am all for bates as long as he doesn't pull a daddy and get run over. no one should ever run over a tennessee volunteers defender. just my .02 cents.

I assure you, it was usually Bill Bates doing the "running over," not the opposite. Herschel Walker was just an anomaly.

I'd like to see us come up with a speed defense for pass rushing downs and to stop option teams from killing us on the edge.
D-Line: Maggitt, A.J.,J. Johnson, Vereen
LB's: Bates, EL. Berry, Randolph
S's: Gaulden and Ev. Berry
CB's: Sutton and Moseley
This would put alotta speed on the field and seal the edges. IMO

AJ at DT? Really?

And why move Randolph close to the line of scrimmage where blockers are close to him?

We could just easily use a normal nickel package and sub in Berry or Bates for AJ and put Gaulden at nickel.

I think AJ and Randolph could use speed in both positions to beat blockers it's not about overpowering.

No offense, but that's the epitome of putting players in positions where they're uncomfortable and asking them to do things they can't do.

AJ has never had to line up with his hand in the dirt directly in front of a lineman and Randolph's strength is in his instincts and ability to read plays from the safety position.

My crack at our Depth Chart

Offense

QB-Worley/Ferguson or Dobbs

WR-North/Croom
WR-Malone/Smith
Slot-Pearson/Johnson/Wharton

RB-Lane/Hurd/Young

TE-Wolf/Helm/Downs/Ellis

RT-Thomas/Kendrick
RG-Kerbyson/Wiesman
C-Crowder/Wiesman
LG-Jackson/Wiesman
LT-Gilliam/Blair

Notes:
  • I put 3 running backs because I think 3 will see reps. I like what Pickett did this spring, but I see Scott as the 4th man if one goes down.
  • I put 4 TEs because I really think all 4 will get a lot of playing time (given Downs comes back from injury). However, I think Wolf gets the most playing time and Helm works his way on to the field quite a bit
  • I have no idea who will end up as our second QB
  • I think Wiesman will be our sixth man on the OL and in the case of an injury anywhere on the interior, he'd be the one to step in. I see Sanders as the 3rd OG.
  • Jason Carr could really throw a screw into things at LT if he gets moved to OL. I think he could be a good OT if they move him.
  • I left out Ryan Jenkins because we haven't seen him healthy yet.

Defense

DE-Maggit/Weatherd/Jakob
DT-J. Williams/O'Brien/Barnett
DT-Saulsberry/O. Williams/Sawyers
DE-Vereen/Hendrix/Henderson

OLB-JRM/Bates/El. Berry/Creamer
MLB-AJ/Bryant/Bynum

CB-Sutton/Foreman/Jones
CB-Moseley/Ev Berry/Payne
NB-Coleman/Payne/Gaulden

S-Randolph/Swafford/Gaulden
S-Kelly/McNeil/McDowell

Notes:
  • I'm assuming Maggit plays much more DE than OLB and Weatherd does the same. Also that Jakob's move was permanent. If this is the case, I wouldn't be surprised if Jakob beats out Weatherd for PT based on size and conditioning. Still, I think Weatherd becomes Maggit Jr for us.
  • I'm also assuming Jordan Williams will slide inside like he did late in the spring. This could be incorrect, but I think if he adds 10 pounds he could be good in the 3 technique. He played the spring at 272, so if he adds ten pounds he'll be just as big or bigger than O'Brien and Williams.
  • I didn't list Charles Mosley or Jashon Robertson in the depth chart because either could end up on offense and I think both are redshirt candidates.
  • I didn't list Carr because I have a feeling he'll be moved to OL.
  • At LB, I think in most 4-3 looks the third LB will be either Maggit, Bates, or Weatherd. Ideally AJ gets subbed out in obvious passing situations.
  • I wouldn't be surprised if Berry beats out Mosely, but I'll give the 2nd spot to Mosely based on a solid spring.
  • I'm honestly not sure where they'll play Gaulden. I think he's a safety all the way, but I've heard NB or CB from others.
  • I think McNeil gets beat out by Kelly, McDowell, or Gaulden. Any of the three wouldn't surprise me, but I put Kelly in as the starter because he has the highest expectations.
  • I'm not even trying with special teams because outside of Darr at punter, I'm really not sure what to expect. I'd like to see Wharton or someone besides Devrin doing returns, but I have a feeling that doesn't happen.

I can't wait until the fall rolls around and I get to see how bad my predictions were :)

4-3 will see Maggitt upright and Jordan Williams at SDE.

Nickel sees JW move inside and Maggitt drop down to DE (opposite Vereen and I think Vereen was taking SDE in those situations). I saw Maggitt rushing the QB from the upright WLB spot as well.

That's just what I've seen to this point. Coaches want the most possible speed on the field for Nickel.

I wouldn't glean a lot of info from the spring game though. It looked to me like they were trying to overload the OL in blitz situations and blocking assignments with the run. 1st OL actually looked to do pretty well but the 2nd string OL was bad bad bad.

This was pretty much my thinking as well. But most likely our defense will be in the nickel the majority of the time, so I listed JWill as primarily a DT and Maggit as primarily a DE.

So can I. Or McDowell or maybe even Gaulden. I'd bet good money it'll be Randolph and a freshman at safety this year. McNeil will pretty much play special teams this yr IMO.

What's the deal with M. Pair? U would think a 5th. Year Senior would be ready to go on the O-Line.
Also like I said in another thread I hope J. Carr gets moved to OT asap we need him there far more.

On video games this concept works, if you were to actually put this defense on the field, our defense will look like they have no idea what theyre doing, and it will make the sportscenter not so top 10. We should probably try to avoid having 6 true freshman on the field at the same time whenever possible, especially bringing them in to play positions they've never played.

Not trying to be an ass, but that just would be a horrible idea, we cant get production out of defensive lineman that have been practicing that position for the 4 years they've been here. Even if the true freshman are better athletes, that's not going to make up for being 18 yrs old, undersized and having no idea what theyre even supposed to be doing.

The number one reason that you have not played and your a 5th senior. not very good-

I think there is a chance that Mixon and 1 of Barnett/Sawyers pass O'Brien for good. He is just not overly talented and lacks ideal size and athleticism.

I might be suffering from spring fever, but I don't see any way that this defense isn't a decent bit better than what we put on the field last year.

I love J. Smith, but he did nothing at DE. 10 games, 28 tackles, and .5 sacks. Only 2 QBH's. Pretty much a non-presence.

McCullers filled space, but that space moved backwards as much as forwards. Didn't have much of a noticeable affect on games. And though DT stats aren't as important, he was identical to Smith in tackles per game and sacks.

Hood didn't do anything. 1.7 tackles per game, zero sacks, and 3 QBH's.

Miller had an absolutely phenomenal game against Kentucky...but prior to that game he had less than 3 tackles per game and 2 sacks.

We had no depth at LB. Johnson was left stranded on the field in clear passing downs. Johnson will have an extra years experience. Sapp and Brewer should be replaced more than adequately JRM, Maggit, Weatherd, and Bates. We will have much better depth, better speed, and likely better starters.

The only DB that we lost was Byron Moore. Coleman, McNeil, Randolph, and Sutton all have an extra year of experience. And we add McDowell, TKJ, Gaulden, Payne, Berry, and Moseley. We should have better starters (more experience), and much better depth.

It is also the second year in the system for all of our returning players.

I know that people are worried about our DT's...but is there really much of an expected drop off from Big Dan and Hood to what we will have next year? And is it the drop off, if there is one, as big as the improvements that we should expect at DE?

Primary point was that Bates will push for significant playing time ahead of Elliott. I really like JRM too. He was the first defensive guy singled out by CBJ in his presser yesterday. Just think Bates is special and has a chance to be "this year's Cam Sutton".

We need Bates to be special, we need more speed at linebacker.
