Thompson Lobbied For Abortion Group After All

Lobbyist are not evil people. They have a job to do that they are hired to do. Many small businesses for instance belong to the chamber of commerce. They individually cannot go to DC to lobby to protect themselves, so they group up and do it together. Are the small mom and pop shop owners evil?

I don't mind a lobbyist, my problem is with the quantity of Lobbyists. There are too many. I'm also not big on the Pharmaceutical companies legislating our health care or the NRA legislating our gun bills etc etc..

There are more lobbyists than there are elected officials. That's ridiculous.

Why is it? Are there not more different groups and issues than elected officials? Did you know that MANY lobbyist are not even paid? But rather they are a member of an association of some sort? Many are lobbyist a few days a year when they make a trip from Nashville to DC. Did you know that you cannot buy a congressman so much as a cup of coffee?
Lobbyist are not the big problem in DC. The single biggest issue is party loyalists who will go against what they know is right in order to make the party leaders happy.

Let me add to that this as well. Another HUGE problem we have is voters who are lazy and wont take time to know the candidates and just pull the lever for either a Dem or a Repub.

If you think that lobbyists don't "contribute" anything to congressmen, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona. Every heard of Jack Abramoff?

There's not a problem with them huh? I guess that's why they're trying to do this..

US senators have adopted a bill designed to clean up politics that imposes stricter rules on lobbying and ethics rules for lawmakers, after a spate of corruption scandals triggered voter anger.

Advocacy groups said the package passed Thursday was a "landmark" bill that, if signed by President George W. Bush, would require lawmakers to disclose donations from lobbyists and ban them from taking gifts, meals or travel paid for by lobbyists.

Now this, I totally agree with.

Couldn't a lot of this be solved by simply implementing term limits?

This is called rhetoric at it's best. There are laws already on the books. What Abramhoff did was illegal and he went to jail. There are limits as to tha amount ANYONE lobbyists or not can donate. A much better way to handle things is to really nail those who break the law.

There are already term limits. Every election the people have a chance to get rid of the bad.

The funny thing to this whole argument is that taking away the money makes those elected even stronger. They have a FREE bully pulpit that challengers don't have. If you think Senators don't know that then you are wrong.
